Position Summary
The Carpenter/Maintenance Specialist under general supervision, performs skilled journeyman-level work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of wooded and wood substitute items and structures. This position reports to the Carpenter Foreman.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs general carpentry work including construction, alteration, and repair of wood and wood substitute items such as cabinets, bookcases, drawers, partitions, panels, building structures, and Formica tops.
- Plans and completes work from initial layout to final assembly by interpreting and applying oral instructions, plans, specifications, blueprints, and work orders.
- Installs, repairs, and replaces doors, door hardware, and locks.
- Installs, repairs, and replaces windows, window hardware, and glass.
- Cuts keys and issues them to authorized personnel.
- Stains and paints unfinished wood.
- Performs minor roof repairs.
- Installs and repairs ceiling tiles and patches broken plaster.
- Erects drywall and installs door frames.
- Sets up and operates woodworking machines and uses hand and power tools incidental to the carpenter trade.
- Coordinates assignments for all school events, especially aspects involving facility setup and catering.
- Assists in moving offices, office furnishings around campus, and excess property into the central storage warehouse.
- Coordinates scheduling of motor pool vehicles.
- Checks vehicles for proper operation, including oil and fuel levels, and washes vehicles.
- Estimates materials required and records time and materials expended on each work order.
- Recommends ordering of necessary parts and supplies for equipment maintenance.
- Responds to emergencies during evening, weekend, and nighttime hours.
- Serves on a rotating on-call schedule for emergency calls on weekends and holidays.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and specifications.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Six months of related experience.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Must possess or complete the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course (paid for by the employer).
- Must pass a background check and be willing to obtain a pre-employment physical (paid for by the employer).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- The employee must possess good knowledge of the principles and practices of the carpentry trade, including tools and equipment used.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools used in the carpentry trade.
- Ability to exercise basic human relations skills and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community.
Working Conditions
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, and reach with hands and arms.
- Frequently required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and communicate verbally.
- Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, as well as moving mechanical parts.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
