Seattle City Light's Wood Pole Design (WPD) Team is seeking a new WPD Engineer (Electrical Engineering Specialist, Associate) to play a crucial role in our pole replacement program. City Light needs to replace 3,000 poles per year, and in this role you will help with the program and review consultant engineers' work. You will also work alongside the WPD team to ensure we meet our other maintenance goals and continue to deliver high-quality work to the other groups at SCL who depend on our expertise. This position will report to the WPD Team Supervisor.

Here is more about what you'll be doing:

  • Performing detailed drafting;
  • Preparing maps, plans, schematics and drawings of electrical features of distribution maps;
  • Preparing work orders and instructions specifying construction standards and materials;
  • Mentoring and reviewing the work of other engineers;
  • Analyzing poles using hand calculations and computer modeling software
  • Providing feedback for crew questions in the field
  • Visiting work sites to check progress and respond to inquiries from crews, contractors and customers.
  • Inspecting poles and responding to customer questions
  • Advising other groups regarding wood pole setting questions

Required Qualifications:

In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:

Requires two years electrical engineering experience, and an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or two years of college level instruction in electrical engineering (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
  • Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, high voltage energized equipment and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • Overnight travel may be required.

License, Certification and Other Requirements

Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility. This position may require the occasional driving of city vehicles.

Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Well-developed coaching skills;
  • Familiarity with pole surveying equipment;
  • Familiarity with structural analysis software such as SpidaCalc/Studio;
  • Knowledge of overhead and underground electrical distribution design and/or other related electrical service work;
  • Familiarity with NESC, CADD programs, WAMS, IKE4, and SCL Standards;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, property descriptions, construction schedules, contracts, and other construction documents;
  • Strong work ethic and ability to effectively manage your own schedule.

The full salary range for this position is $51.74 to $60.23 per hour.
