Job Summary

The City of Red Wing Public Works, Utilities Division has an opening for one Utility Operator to join the team at the wastewater plant! Monday through Friday work schedule and every 5th weekend. Performs a variety of tasks to maintain and repair the City's water and wastewater supply, treatment, storage, sewage collection, water distribution, and monitoring facilities. Assists with operation and maintenance of utility infrastructure including water and/or wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, wells, reservoirs, and underground distribution and collection systems.

Essential Job Functions

Day-to-Day:

Perform critical operational and maintenance activities independently and provide work task instruction to other staff. This will include cleaning and maintenance of facilities, equipment and tools, vehicles, and building and grounds. Equipment may include complex processing equipment, chemical feed systems, SCADA systems, and electrical controls.

Respond to after-hours alarms, assess problems, and take corrective action.

Monitor and record facility operations through site visits and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system; make changes as needed to optimize operation and maintenance activities.

Operate treatment plants, lift stations, booster pumps and water reservoirs within accepted operational parameters and controls; make process adjustments to keep facilities operating efficiently and effectively.

Collect samples and complete routine laboratory analyses to assure federal and state standards are met.

Utilize asset management computer software to receive work task assignments and complete documentation of preventative maintenance activities.

Operate Utility Division equipment, including trucks, skid-steers, portable pumps, vactor truck, sewer jetting and rodding equipment, tanker trucks, sewer cameras, jackhammers, excavators and tampers. Operators working at the treatment plants will operate and maintain complex mechanical equipment and chemical feed systems.

Participate in weekend and holiday rounds to monitor and document facility operation, perform light maintenance, laboratory testing, and other duties as necessary.

Assist with utility construction activities, including installation of water mains or sewers, valves, manholes, catch basins and other utility infrastructure.

Assist with utility maintenance, including cleaning sewers and lift stations, flushing water mains, exercising valves, and repairing pipe breaks.

Regularly:

Assist with snow removal at the airport and temporary assignments to other divisions.

Some tasks will include working in confined spaces and require use of specialized personal protection equipment including respirators. Must remain certified to work under these conditions.

Perform other duties as assigned, including snow removal.

Experience, Education, Certifications, Physical Requirements

Residency requirement of forty (40) minute driving distance of Wastewater Plant: 1020 E 5th St, Red Wing, MN 55066.

Starting wage based on licensure. This position will be filled at one of the following levels depending upon candidate qualifications:

Assistant Operator: Must have HS diploma or equivalent. Minnesota Class D Wastewater Operator Certificate and Type 4 Bio-Solids Certificate within two (2) years of employment. Valid unrestricted Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with tanker endorsement within one (1) year of employment. Must pass DOT physical. Experience equivalent or greater than what is required for the Assistant Operator certification.

Assistant Operator starting pay of $29.91 per hour.

Operator: Must have HS diploma or equivalent. Minnesota Class C Wastewater Certificate and a Type IV bio-solids Certification within two (2) years of employment. Valid unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement within one (1) year of employment. Must pass DOT physical. Experience equivalent or greater than what is required for the Operator certification.

Operator starting pay of $33.20 per hour.

**The successful candidate would be automatically promoted to a higher level upon achieving the minimum certifications for that position.

Physical Requirements:

Heavy manual labor requiring continuous use of large motor skills, standing for long periods, and frequent bending, stooping, twisting, turning, crouching, stretching, and reaching.

Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, noise, grease, oil and grime.

Frequent exposure to seasonal temperature extremes.

Exposure to known and unknown materials that are present in wastewater, some of which are likely to present hazards if not correctly handled.

Work around moving equipment requires caution as well as use of safety apparel.

Work may include intermittent lifting, pushing or pulling of over 60 pounds.

Must be domiciled within a forty (40) minute driving distance of their Primary Work Station.

Required to work in permit and non-permit confined spaces in the role of Entrant or Attendant.

Work entails high or dangerous work conditions.

If extended a conditional offer of employment, candidate must pass a DOT physical medical exam and DOT drug screening. Safety-sensitive employees are subject to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) drug testing regulations under 49 CFR Part 40 which includes marijuana.
