The Utility/Carpenter position provides skills to complete a variety of projects on campus for Facilities Services in support of students, faculty and staff. These projects range from work orders submitted through our on-line work order system, to completing office remodels, ceiling repair and installations, drywall installation and repair, and to helping other Facilities Services areas. This position also may also serve as our back-up locksmith so we have redundancy in that important area.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform all types of building maintenance and repair that is generated from the Facilities Services work order system.
- Prepare lists of materials based on blueprints, sketches, etc.
- Order material as required by the project with supervisor's approval.
- Perform general construction, set and repair doors of all types, install acoustical ceilings, repair furniture.
- Perform duties as the backup locksmith. Duties will include pin cores, cut keys, work on locks and hardware, and input data into the key program.
- Operate power saws, drills, grinders, table saws, jointers, and other trade related tools.
- Be available to assist other facilities services departments such as grounds, heating plant, plumbing, etc.
- Manage material inventory and supplies as work progresses.
- Maintain cleanliness of work area and surrounding areas at all times, including maintenance work vehicle.
- Assist with snow removal.
- Work in a manner to insure personal safety and safety towards the campus community. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This position may provide work guidance/direction occasionally for student workers and peers.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:
- High School diploma required. Additionally, some formal training and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in the carpentry field preferred.
- Computer skills for accessing the college's web-based work order system and e-mail are required. Recognition that maintenance work can happen in a wide variety of spaces. Must perform careful planning and cleanup of work.
- Must be able to follow and give directions.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Mobility: ability to ascend and descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps; not be afraid of heights; walk or stand for extended periods of time.
- Lifting: ability to lift and hold 50 pounds, frequently lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Dexterity: must have a full range of motion in the upper extremities; manual dexterity to operate equipment and hand tools; ability to work for extended periods with arms above head.
- Be available for scheduled shift work, M-F 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Overtime may be required.
- Inside and outside buildings--working in temperatures that range from heated and cooled rooms to outside temperatures of hot and cold.
- Some areas may be poorly ventilated or heavily congested.
- Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, noise, dust and fumes.
- Required to work in restricted places which may require stooping, bending and kneeling.
- Buildings and grounds are smoke free.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Valid driver's license. Must pass an MVR check and meet college fleet guidelines. Ability to operate a fork lift.
