Facilities Mechanic III Job Group: Merit Required Minimum Qualifications: Must possess a basic knowledge of plumbing, electricity, maintenance of steam and mechanical equipment. Must have four years of work experience in the listed crafts, including apprenticeship or technical training. At least two years of that experience must be in the same craft. Preferred Qualifications: Technical expertise in building infrastructure systems and building automation systems.

Experience with building lighting, electrical systems, plumbing, and HVAC.

Proven experience in emergency response and autonomous problem-solving.

Familiarity with control systems, environmental compliance, and aquatic safety standards.

Certified Pool Operator.

Recreation Services at Iowa State University is currently seeking applicants for a Facilities Mechanic III.

This position plays a mission-critical role in ensuring the continuous operation, safety, and efficiency of complex building systems across multiple Recreation Services facilities. This includes specialized oversight of aquatic infrastructure such as two pools and a hot tub, all within an environment where life safety is paramount and system reliability is non-negotiable.

System Performance & Maintenance:

-Monitor, maintain, and optimize mechanical, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and automation systems. Perform hands-on repairs and technical troubleshooting with minimal supervision. Respond to environmental hazards and system failures 24/7 to preserve operational integrity and safety.

Aquatics Infrastructure Oversight:

-Ensure compliance, safety, and functionality of aquatic systems. Conduct diagnostics and maintenance on pool pumps, filtration, heating, and chemical control systems.

Emergency Response & Safety:

-Act as first responder for critical facility incidents. Evaluate and restore infrastructure in emergencies without the need for escalation.

Cross-Departmental Collaboration:

-Partner with facility managers, campus operations, and environmental health & safety teams. Participate in university-wide infrastructure initiatives and system upgrades.

Leadership & Mentorship:

-Train and mentor student staff in preventative maintenance and safety protocols.

Under general supervision, performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the repairing, servicing, and maintaining of buildings and electrical, mechanical and plumbing equipment.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Performs preventive maintenance on motors, pumps, and other equipment, and maintains appropriate records.

Constructive sanitizers, installs oxygen outlets and system according to engineering specifications.

Performs preventive maintenance and emergency repair work.

Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams, and equipment specifications.

Performs work in related crafts areas as assigned.

Assists in directing the work of others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the hazards involved and safety precautions necessary in the electrical, mechanical and plumbing trades.

Knowledge of work practices, methods, and processes utilized in the electrical, mechanical and plumbing trade.

Knowledge of preventive maintenance necessary for equipment and ability to maintain appropriate records.

Knowledge of proper lifting and bending techniques.

Ability to operate safely the tools and equipment used in the electrical, mechanical and plumbing trades.

Ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams and equipment specifications.

Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

Ability to work in a variety of environments including confined spaces, low light areas, at heights, with exposure to temperature extremes.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
