Downtown Parks Assistant Maintenance Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY
This position will assist and perform maintenance and construction project work at various parks in the downtown division throughout the city. Provide support to the Parks Maintenance Supervisor and to other park maintenance supervisors at various parks with maintenance needs & improvement projects. Responsible for assisting with supervising & managing multiple employees involved in parks maintenance / grounds area. Performs routine &/or semi-skilled labor in maintenance of park grounds; including the operation, maintenance and repair of equipment or tools. May also be responsible for application of pesticides, herbicides or other similar duties which require advanced knowledge or skills; and performs other duties as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist with supervising maintenance operations as well as provide general daily maintenance support at various parks throughout the city, at the request of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, parks director, deputy director or other maintenance supervisors.
- Assist with and/or manage small to large scale maintenance, repairs, improvement projects and new construction at various parks in the city.
- Assist other parks staff at special events with setup, event operations, and clean up in the city and parks as needed.
- Assigns work, supervises, trains and evaluates park maintenance personnel.
- Assists with recruiting part-time/seasonal job candidates.
- Inspects work performed by employees for proper and adequate completion.
- Regularly inspects playgrounds according to policy, completes and submits proper inspection forms to the main office. Make any necessary repairs to playgrounds and/or report any safety concerns or repairs that are needed.
- Assist with assigning use of and has custody of tools and equipment.
- In the absence of the Park Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for payroll/timesheet records and supervises part-time and seasonal workers.
- Mows grass with riding/zero turn and push mowers, picks up trash and debris.
- Plants shrubbery, trees, and flowers, seeds, lays sod, fertilizers and waters grounds; rids grounds of weeds and unsightly vegetation by pulling or spraying weeds, operating a weed-eater, trimming trees, raking leaves and hauling debris.
- Cleans restrooms, bleachers, and dugouts, replaces light bulbs, empties trash, and sweeps and mops floors.
- Paints and assists in repairing, constructing and remodeling buildings, restrooms, shelters/pavilions, offices and storehouses.
- Winterizes restrooms, pipes and unstops clogged drains and various other plumbing items.
- Builds, installs, and/or paints playground equipment, foul poles, trash receptacles, fences, tables and field bases.
- Assists with maintaining basketball/pickleball/tennis courts and assist with splash pad maintenance operations.
- Performs general service and preventive maintenance work on vehicles and equipment; pumps gas, washes and paints equipment and vehicles, replacing mowing blades, batteries, wiper blades and headlights, checks fluid levels and tires, changes spark plugs, clean carburetors, and greases bearings.
- Diagnoses and repairs minor equipment malfunctions; forwards other major repairs to city garage.
- Operates dump and pick-up trucks, grades, tractors, paint stripers, riding/zero turn and push mowers, drills, circular, concrete, jig and hand saws, paint guns and grinders; climbs ladders and utilizes various other hand and power tools and equipment.
- Loads and unloads equipment, fertilizer and debris.
- Completes work and purchase orders, inventory and other forms. Use an online/electronic work order system and follow up on all work orders and ensure proper completion.
- Assist with determining planting dates and select sprays and fertilizers.
- Assist with planting arrangements on seasonal baskets and barrels
- Assist with seasonal decorations including but not limited to: flags, Christmas tree, lights, garlands, boulevard banners, etc.
- Assist with snow, ice and debris removal as needed downtown.
- Performs other related work as required and requested.
ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES
- Knowledge and experience with mechanical and small engine repair.
- Experience and knowledge of heavy equipment, tractors, backhoes, zero turn mowers, and power equipment is preferred.
- Experience and knowledge in various trades such as carpentry, plumbing and electrical work is preferred.
- This position requires versatility and adaptability and the ability to work on multiple complex projects at once.
- Basic knowledge of computers and technology.
- Position requires a strong attention to detail and friendly, approachable disposition with the public.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Preferred that within 120 days of appointment of this position, the employee obtain a Kentucky Applicator Pesticide/Herbicide license . The Pesticide/Herbicide license should be possessed and maintained to remain in this position. Other certifications (Certified Playground Safety Inspector, Aquatic Facility Operator, etc.) may be required if deemed necessary to job function.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two years of experience in parks and/or facility grounds maintenance, landscaping or construction preferred.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High School Graduate or equivalent.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed in both indoors and outdoors, mostly outdoors, regardless of weather conditions; work includes sitting, standing, stooping, walking, using ladders, operating power equipment, and lifting objects of more than 50 lbs. Exposed to weather, noise, and machinery (including its moving parts). Also may be exposed to fumes, chemicals and toxic substances. The position has typical set hours Monday through Friday, however there are multiple occasions where night and weekend work will be required and is an essential part of this position.
