The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a journey level trades professional who is excited to serve as an all-around resource in facilities maintenance as a Maintenance Mechanic 3 in Vancouver, WA. In this role, you will be responsible for preventative and corrective maintenance on all buildings and structures within the Southwest Region. This senior specialist will perform trades maintenance activities at rest areas and radio sites, ensuring WSDOT's facilities and mechanical systems are operating safely and efficiently. Our top candidate will possess journey level skills to operate a wide range of hand and power tools to include trucks, bucket trucks, and man lifts. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What to Expect

This position works indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and around electrical hazards, energized equipment, and stored energy. Duties may involve uneven terrain, confined spaces such as attics and crawl spaces, electrical panels and wiring, and elevated heights above 300 feet. Weekend, holiday, and non-scheduled emergency call-outs may be required, as well as regional travel on per diem up to 75% of the time.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Make repairs and perform preventive maintenance to building structures to include roofing repairs, plumbing repairs, carpentry, window replacement, and overhead doors.
  • Maintain and repair heating system components and related equipment including heat pumps, gas heaters, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and vents.
  • Make repairs and modifications to potable and non-potable water systems, water/sewage systems and hot water systems.
  • Repair and replace plumbing, piping, fixtures, and related mechanical devices.
  • Perform drainage system maintenance, oil/water separator, drainage swales and ponds.
  • Maintain yard and office lighting equipment and systems.
  • Maintain fire alarm systems, security systems, and power gate systems region wide.
  • Drive trucks, operate man-lifts, operate a wide variety of hand and power tools to complete work assignments.
  • Make repairs and perform preventive maintenance on buildings, heating, lighting, and water supply equipment that support the highway system and at highway safety rest areas on Interstate 5, SR14, SR401, SR504, and SR12.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Skilled Trade Proficiency: Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience in construction-related trades, such as carpentry, general building maintenance, mechanical, and plumbing. Experience may be gained through working as a full-time helper or trainee to a journey-level tradesperson, successful completion of a recognized trades apprenticeship program, or full journey-level status in a trade union.
  • Repair and Maintenance Planning: Ability to independently assess, plan, and execute repairs and modifications to buildings and utility systems.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Demonstrated ability to implement and follow preventive maintenance routines across multiple facility systems to ensure reliability and reduce unplanned outages.
  • Systems Understanding: Knowledge of the interrelationships among structural, mechanical, electrical, and drainage systems in facility operations.

In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license, with the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's license (CDL) Class A without air brakes restriction within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Ability to travel out-of-town within the region.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies.
  • Ability to relocate equipment, materials, and tools weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, up to 300 feet.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters a culture of respect and equal opportunity.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Building Operators Certification (BOC) level 1-2.
  • Successful completion of a recognized trades apprenticeship program.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including email, Internet, and data entry.
