Sr. Supervisor, R&D Build - Motors & Actuators

  • Boston Dynamics, inc.
  • Waltham, Massachusetts
  • Full Time

Boston Dynamics is seeking a Sr. Supervisor, R&D Build to lead the hands-on assembly, test, and troubleshooting of critical electromechanical systems for our next-generation robotic platforms. This individual will oversee the build of custom actuators and motors during the research and prototype phases, supporting the rapid iteration cycles that drive innovation across our humanoid and mobile robot platforms.

This is a player-coach role requiring both technical depth and team leadership. You will be responsible for managing a small team of skilled technicians while remaining closely engaged in day-to-day build and debug activities. The ideal candidate brings experience with complex mechanical assemblies, high-performance motors, and electromechanical integration-and thrives in an R&D environment where precision and speed go hand in hand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of R&D technicians focused on building and assembling custom motors, actuators, and motion subsystems

  • Plan and coordinate daily work based on build schedules, development priorities, and program needs

  • Partner closely with Engineering, Test, and Quality to ensure fast root cause resolution, high quality output and clean handoffs

  • Actively participate in builds, rework, and teardowns to troubleshoot complex electromechanical assemblies

  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety, and ESD compliance across work areas and labs

  • Ensure appropriate documentation is followed and maintained (build work instructions, torque specs, test results, rework records)

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of build processes, tooling, and fixtures to improve efficiency and repeatability

  • Help onboard new hires and train technicians in best practices for motor and actuator builds

  • Coordinate with Supply Chain and Program Management functions to ensure material readiness and resolve shortages or issues.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in prototype or low-volume manufacturing environments with a focus on motors, actuators, or electromechanical assemblies

  • 2+ years of team leadership or supervisory experience in a technical build environment

  • Deep familiarity with precision assembly practices, including torque control, press fits, alignment, bonding/potting, and motor winding/encapsulation techniques

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and assembly documentation

  • Strong troubleshooting and mechanical debugging skills; comfortable with tools, meters, scopes, and test rigs

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, iterative, and ambiguous R&D setting

  • Proactive communicator with strong organizational and task management skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with robotics, automotive drivetrains, aerospace actuation systems, or similar complex motion systems

  • Exposure to motor theory, encoder/sensor integration, and actuator performance testing

  • Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems (e.g. Arena, Agile)

  • Familiarity with Project Management Software (e.g. JIRA, Smartsheets)

  • Hands-on experience with developing or implementing build SOPs, torque specs, or test workflows

  • Experience supporting design-for-assembly or design-for-serviceability feedback loops with Engineering

We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
