Salary Note: Starting pay rates are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity. New employees typically start in the lower half of range, but experts in their field may be considered for starting pay rates in the top half of the range.

Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to perform construction-related carpentry activities for capital improvement and development projects at MPHA properties.

All activities must support the Minneapolis Public Housing Authoritys (MPHA or Authority) mission, vision, and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The position duties and responsibilities listed below describe the general nature and scope of work. Other responsibilities, duties and skills may be required and assigned, as needed.

  • Installs doors, cabinets, wood window sashes, floors, handrails, countertops, wood trim (inside and outside), siding, and other wooden objects.
  • Installs and replaces locks, locking systems, and door closures.
  • Installs aluminum windows, screens, ceilings, walls, flashing, gutters, and downspouts.
  • Installs rubber base, shade brackets and shades, mailboxes, peephole viewers, and hardware on doors.
  • Rebuilds porches and other structures; repairs or replaces roofs and roof vents; caulks around windows and doors.
  • Remodels MPHA properties, builds garages, storage sheds, and other structures as needed.
  • Replaces floor coverings and builds forms for cement work.
  • May be assigned maintenance-related carpentry work.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position generally works on Authority properties, which may cause the employee to experience a range in temperatures and other weather conditions. The noise level may be loud, and the environment may be more hazardous than a standard office environment. This position may be required to work with contractors as well as Authority residents.

Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma or GED, with vocational training focused on carpentry and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in construction or building maintenance. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Must be a Minnesota Journeyperson Carpenter, having successfully completed an Apprenticeship training course approved by the State Division of Apprenticeship, or 10 years of verifiable carpentry experience.

Some positions may require possession of a valid drivers license. Those positions may also require use of a personal vehicle and evidence of individual automobile insurance coverage, or the ability to be insurable under the Authoritys automobile insurance plan at the standard rate. Must pass a criminal history background check.

Technical Skills

To perform this job successfully, the employee should have strong computer skills, experience with Yardi or similar software, and MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. Must have the ability to learn other computer software programs as required by assigned tasks.

To perform this job successfully, the employee is frequently required to travel to various Authority properties to perform maintenance work. Daily movements include sitting; standing; reaching and grasping; operating handheld tools and other machinery; moving about the properties; and attending onsite meetings and offsite meetings. The employee must be able to exchange information in person, in writing, and via telephone. The employee must occasionally transport up to 50 pounds.
