POSITION 25S126A TITLE: Mechanic (260)

LOCATION: Bus Garage

EMPLOYMENT TERM: Anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. Normal contract: 260 days, 8 hours per day with flexible start and end times based on needs of Transportation Director.

BID PERIOD: June 12 - June 18, 2025, (4:00 pm).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Any applicant not currently employed by Marshall County Schools must show evidence of possessing a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a valid motor vehicles operator's license and be willing and able to obtain a minimum of a CDL Class B license with a Passenger endorsement (Do we add a time limit?)
  • Be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule
  • Possess writing skills to be able to complete assigned written reports
  • Have the ability to develop and maintain an effective working relationship with others
  • Exhibit a high moral character, a good physical appearance, and a cooperative friendly personality
  • Pass state developed tests to indicate minimum competencies in each area of job classification as titled. Also perform additional tests that demonstrate proficiency to perform other tasks as they relate to basic engine, automotive electrical systems, fuel systems, computer control systems, ignition system, emission control system, cooling and heating systems, brake system, transmissions, drive line, steering and suspension, exhaust system, lubrication, and preparing new vehicles or hold/have held such title of employment with a county board of education.
  • Pass random drug testing as required due to holding a CDL (once obtained) and working a safety sensitive position.

A mechanic must demonstrate success in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring an understanding of and proficiency in mechanical repair of diesel school buses and diesel trucks.

He/she must possess a valid WV Inspector's License as required by law to perform vehicle inspection.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: It shall be the duties of the mechanic to:

  • Follow all standard garage procedures in making mechanical repairs

  • Reporting to the crew leader and shop foreman any defects discovered while working on a vehicle

  • Not knowingly place any defective parts on any vehicle and placing it back in service

  • Keeping his/her work area, and the garage clean, safe, and sanitary for all to work in

  • Follow all safety procedures for the job being performed

  • Wear goggles and eye protection when grinding, drilling, etc.

  • Place safety jack-stands under vehicles that are jacked up before crawling under them to work

  • Use the safety cage when inflating split rim truck tires

  • Disconnect all two way radios from vehicles before any electric welding on the vehicle

  • Be able to safely and competently perform the following tasks:

  • Rebuild brake systems (both hydraulic and air)

  • Repair front end and steering components

  • Trouble shoot and repair electrical systems

  • Tune up engines

  • Rebuild carburetors

  • Work on automatic and standard transmissions

  • Work on diesel engines

  • Work on differential units

  • Completely rebuild engines

  • Able to perform road call service for down vehicles

  • Perform all correct grease, oil, and lubrication services for vehicles

  • Have complete knowledge of automotive parts, able to catalog and organize them, and keep accurate written records for cost accounting on vehicles.

  • Perform other required tasks as they relate to basic engine, automotive electrical systems, fuel systems, computer control systems, ignition system, emission control system, cooling and heating systems, brake system, transmissions, drive line, steering and suspension, exhaust system, lubrication, and preparing new vehicles.

  • Perform all other assignments as made by the Transportation Director or Shop Foreman, as he/she may deem necessary and appropriate.

SALARY: Salary to be determined by salary classification level, experience, and education according to schedule at plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation. Pay Grade F.
