Mechanic

Chenango County's Department of Public Works has an opening for a MECHANIC. This is a skilled mechanic position

involving responsibility for the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of motor equipment including, but not limited to

automobiles, pickup trucks, bulldozers, graders, tractors, snowplows, dump trucks, front-end loaders, landfill

compactors, forklifts, and in a school district, school buses, station wagons, vans, and other motor equipment. Duties of

a Mechanic will vary between School District, Town and County positions. Incumbents employed by the Chenango

County Department of Public Works are required to work additional hours when needed to repair and maintain public

works equipment required for snow and ice removal activities or emergency storm damage cleanup activities. Work is

performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowed for planning the details of each assignment. In

a School District supervision may occasionally be exercised over the work of Mechanic Helpers. Does related work as

required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of full-time paid work experience or its part-time equivalent in a position of Mechanic

or a similar title within the last five years with responsibility for the repair and maintenance of heavy motor vehicles and/or heavy

highway construction equipment. Special Requirements: <li>1. At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment a

candidate/incumbent must possess a driving record acceptable to the employing municipalitys insurance carrier. <li>2. An

appointee to a County or Town position must possess a valid New York State Commercial Drivers License B (CDL-B) or higher

(CDL-A) that does not have an L airbrake restriction* at time of appointment and must maintain such drivers license throughout

employment in the position.* A certain number of appointees to Chenango County Department of Public Works positions will be

required to possess a CDL-A with no airbrake restriction. <li>3. As a condition of employment Mechanics employed by the

Chenango County Department of Public Works will be required to possess and maintain their own set of tools.

The position has a 40 hour work week and 2025 starting pay rate is $25.23 per hour and includes a full benefits package.
