The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a Professional Engineer to fill a Field Engineer (Engineer III) position with the Region One Willard Construction Crew.
Principal Duties A UDOT construction crew is a team responsible for administering construction projects for the Department of Transportation. They ensure that the contractor selected delivers a quality product in a timely manner. Their responsibilities include monitoring and documenting all aspects of the work to meet the requirements set forth in the plans and specifications, managing changes and adjustments that are required in the field based on changing or unknown conditions, and testing, measuring, accepting, and paying for work that is completed. As a Field Engineer, you will support the construction crew and assist the Resident Engineer in management of personnel, budgets, and construction contracts. Your duties include:
  • Monitoring construction contracts.
  • Managing personnel and budget.
  • Designing and developing engineering projects.
  • Evaluating critical path schedules and writing change orders.
  • Planning, designing, construction and maintenance of facilities.
  • Working in a team to meet quality, scope, schedule, budget, and safety requirements on assigned projects.
  • Preparing engineering and design documents using computer assisted engineering and design software and equipment.
  • Performing field inspections and material analysis.
  • Writing or drafting technical reports, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.
  • Working with the public who may be impacted by the projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Qualified Candidate
The qualified candidate for this position will have:
  • An active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah in accordance with the provisions of Utah Code Annotated 58-22.
  • Prior experience in administering heavy civil construction projects, and reviewing plans and specifications for constructability.
  • Experience with CADD/computer assisted drafting and design.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Experience working with the public and contractors.
  • Excellent skills in identifying and solving complex problems.
  • Excellent understanding of the UDOT partnering process and ability to work with the public.
  • The ability to mentor and train others.

Preference may be given to those who have at least 1 year of experience in the construction or materials field.
This position may be filled at the Engineer II level (salary range $33.55 - $56.17) for applicants without a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah. For the Engineer II level, the ideal candidates will have:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and,
  • Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) and,
  • Completed at least two years of post-graduate engineering experience. ( A Master's degree, in a related field, may be considered for one year post-graduate experience.)
