This position is responsible for operating automated sanitation equipment on multiple prescribed routes for the collection of trash, recyclables, leaves, and other yard waste; responsible for the completion of the daily route and disposal of refuse and recyclables at the landfill.
NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville and meet the needs of the organization, which may result in the assignment of other duties and take precedence over duties described in this job description. - Instructs employees in standard methods of refuse collection and disposal.
- Operates 35-foot front-loader truck, knuckle boom truck, automated vacuum truck, or related sanitation equipment.
- Serves as a lead worker, ensuring crew safety and work quality.
- Conducts thorough pre-trip inspections and performs other routine preventative maintenance.
- Cleans equipment and deodorizes the trucks.
- Supervises one or more sanitation laborers in the loading and unloading of refuse, recyclables, limbs, leaves, and various yard waste.
- Reports equipment repairs to supervisor.
- Operates as a Motor Equipment Operator when needed.
- Ensures crew safety on route.
- Reports complaints of residents while on residential garbage routes.
- Answers questions from citizens regarding sanitation procedures.
- Records information such as times, stops, and unusual situations on the route.
- Drives a rear loader packer to collect curbside trash, furniture, and yard waste.
- Maintains and updates list of customers with special needs and/or who require extra cart pick-ups.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
- High School diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in the operation of motorized equipment.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina CDL Class B license, or any valid CDL Class B license with ability to obtain a North Carolina CDL Class B license within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing sanitation trucks and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of sanitation equipment.
- General knowledge of city policies concerning refuse collection.
- Ability to operate the overhead dumping mechanism in back alleys, all types of traffic conditions, and under utility wires.
- Ability to operate a variety of trucks and equipment as part of the sanitation department.
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, directions, and traffic signals.
- Ability to communicate ideas clearly, concisely, and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the public.
Job Related Physical Requirements
This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for the operation of machines, motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Working Conditions
The employee is subject to outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, gases, oils, and hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts. Employees may be required to wear a respirator during the leaf collection season and could be "reasonably anticipated," in performing his or her job duties, to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
