Job Title: Mechanical Estimator Job Description The Mechanical Estimator is responsible for interpreting mechanical fabrication drawings and Process & Instrumentation Drawings. This role involves completing take-offs for pipes, fittings, and mechanical components from drawings and plant site visits, organizing this information into cost estimates, and calculating labor for shop fabrication and installation. The position requires understanding metal shop fabrication processes, estimating labor factors, and working closely with various departments to support project quoting. Additionally, the Mechanical Estimator interfaces with vendors to obtain component pricing and directly with customers to prepare proposals. Responsibilities
- Read and interpret mechanical fabrication drawings and Process & Instrumentation Drawings.
- Complete pipe, fitting, and mechanical component take-offs from drawings, plant site visits, and email RFQ information.
- Organize data into MPC cost estimate sheets, input component prices, and calculate labor for shop fabrication/installation.
- Estimate labor factors for metal shop fabrication processes such as rolling, forming, welding, polishing/grinding, and machining.
- Work closely with sales personnel, project managers, process engineers, shop supervisors, and field supervisors for timely support in quoting multiple projects.
- Interface with vendors to obtain guidance on component selections and pricing.
- Directly interact with customers for proposal preparation and inside component sales.
- Assist sales personnel with writing technical sections of proposals and ensure compliance with company policies.
- Travel overnight an average of 10% to state and domestic U.S. customer facilities.
- Able to read blueprints.
- Minimum of 3+ years in an Estimating role.
- Excellent math and technical reading aptitude.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Thorough knowledge of fabrication processes for labor quotation.
- Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Piping process is helpful for editing as-built records and pipe run take-offs.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining a professional attitude.
- Ability to work independently and complete assignments within prescribed routines and priorities.
- Minimum technical school degree in Mechanical Technician or Welding Program.
- Hands-on training with process pipe installation or Project Management experience is desired.
- Ability to obtain a Passport for international travel.
The work environment is primarily office-based with around 10% travel to various sites, including Canada. The role involves collaboration with the Sales department, designers, and engineers to support the estimation of sanitary process systems, equipment, and mechanical components, primarily utilized in the food and dairy industries.
