Summary/Objective: The Design Engineer is responsible for the design, qualification, and certification of aerospace, commercial and military components that include both metallic and non-metallic based materials. Responsibilities will relate to understanding the performance parameters of the subject component, identifying methods of conducting qualification testing to ensure compliance with these identified performance parameters, and documentation of test results and certification reports. The Design Engineer also works to ensure manufacturability of new designs in conjunction with Manufacturing Engineering to transition items into production.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design support at all stages of the design process from vetting to proposal, through design, manufacturing, and qualification testing until completion and product introduction.
  • Develop optimized product designs in terms of cost, weight, and robustness by challenging existing designs and offering new ideas.
  • Utilize CAD software to create solid models and detailed manufacturing drawings of the product.
  • Delivering high quality technical data packages.
  • Ensure the product design is complete in terms of regulatory and customer requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to the design process while meeting schedule requirements
  • Be involved in problem solving activities throughout the manufacturing, qualification and ‘in service’ phases of a project.
  • Support the Manufacturing Engineering team with respect to transitioning designs into production and testing.
  • If material qualification testing is required, develop and oversee the test plans.
  • Collaborate with sales, and potentially customers, to understand their needs to develop value-added solutions.
  • Demonstrate exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace or mechanical engineering required.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience highly preferred.
  • Experience with manual and/or CNC machining (mills, lathes, band saw, etc.) preferred.
  • Welding experience (TIG) preferred.
  • Experience/knowledge of electro-mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks.
  • Understand basic principles of reverse-engineering parts and systems.
  • Basic knowledge of GD&T standards, measurement practices and tools, manufacturing techniques, and various material properties.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
  • Proficiency with technical writing skills
  • Proficiency with technical writing skills.

Work Conditions:

The work environment characteristics described herein represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. While performing the duties of this position, the employee will work in an office environment as well as on the plant floor. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in precarious places. This position is occasionally exposed to wet and humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; the employee is occasionally required reach with hands and arms. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
