JOB SUMMARY:

The City of Homewood is seeking to hire a Plans Examiner to be responsible for reviewing plans submitted by construction professionals to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances. Incumbents also interpret and clarify codes and ordinances for construction professionals and the general public. Employees in this job class research and review codes, ordinances, notices, and permitting to ensure that their understanding and knowledge are on par with the most current information.

Homewood $60,652 - $94,099

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:

  • Driver's license.

  • Experience with reading drawings, applying code interpretations, and full plan review.

  • Experience conducting inspections of buildings and materials to see-design-in-practice (e.g., building inspector, foreman, carpenter, construction superintendent, or project manager).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The following are job-related qualifications deemed desirable by the City of Homewood. These qualifications may be considered by Homewood when reviewing applications and inviting candidates to participate in subsequent steps in the selection processes.

  • Certification as a Building Inspector by the ICC.

  • Certification as a Plans Examiner by the ICC.

  • Associate's degree or higher in Architecture, Engineering, Building Science or Construction Management.

  • Experience reading sanitary sewer plans.

  • Experience preparing and working with architecture and engineering drawings.

TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Researches and reviews codes, ordinances, notices, and permitting by regularly checking for updates and changes in codes and staying abreast of industry standards to be able to provide accurate information and guidance to various boards, agencies, building and construction professionals, inspectors, etc. to maintain and ensure code compliance and timely issuance of building permits.
  • Engages in activities designed to ensure professional development, awareness of developments in the field, and knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and/or guidelines.
  • Documents and maintains records of project activities to include plan reviews, inspection results, fee calculation, notices, zoning, and permit information in order to ensure appropriate documentation is maintained according to industry standards.
  • Performs technical reviews of plans and specifications utilizing best practices to determine and ensure compliance with all applicable building, zoning and permitting codes, ordinances, and requirements so that projects can be completed according to industry standard.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. May involve occasional light lifting of items or objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is conducted mostly indoors in an office setting, with periodic field visits to external indoor or outdoor locations. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc.
