The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking several detail-oriented and collaborative individuals with strong analytical, design, and field inspection skills to support both the construction and design functions within the Project Engineering Office (PEO) in Wenatchee, WA. These positions play a vital role in ensuring transportation projects are delivered in accordance with standard specifications, contract plans, and WSDOTs mission to provide safe and efficient travel throughout the state. Responsibilities include preparing plans, specifications, estimates, and reports to enhance the safety, quality, and capacity of the transportation system, and performing field inspections, collecting data, and coordinating with engineering staff to monitor contractor compliance.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Engineers will:
- Prepare reports, contract plans, specifications, and estimates for highway projects.
- Perform computer aided drafting and design using CADD software to produce Right-of-Way and design plan sheets.
- Use a computer to evaluate field data and/or survey data to determine quantities, elevations, coordinates, grades and curve data.
- Use Microsoft Office Programs to prepare reports, specifications, and estimates.
- Assist Office Engineer with design documentation which includes estimates, final records and As-Built Plans.
- Serve as a Project Inspector on earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, drainage, and other duties, which will often require the operation of a nuclear gauge, inspection of crusher operation, and inspection of Asphalt Plant operations.
- Inspect and direct the inspection of highway and highway structures for conformance with contract plans and specifications.
- Measure and record materials quantities and visually inspect material installations on project sites.
- Coordinate with contractors representatives regarding schedule and clarify questions pertaining to contract documents.
- Prepare and coordinate the preparation of contract estimates and final records.
Qualifications
These are Transportation Engineer 2 (TE2) positions. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the positions at a lower level (TE1) depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal in-training plan.
At minimum, at least one (1) of the following are required :
- One (1) year experience as a Transportation Technician 3 or equivalent. OR
- Certification as an Engineer-In-Training. OR
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or closely related field, such as structural engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or construction management.
Note: Students graduating with an accepted degree prior to January 1, 2026, are eligible to apply for this position.
In addition to one (1) of the above, the following are also required :
- The ability to obtain and/or maintain valid certifications in the following: flagging card, various materials testing and sampling certifications (ACI and WAQTC), and completion of the certified inspector program (WSDOT).
- Experience communicating effectively to multiple audiences both orally and in writing.
- Experience using standard software to prepare records, drawings, and documents.
- Experience adhering to safety policies and diligence in performing work in a safe manner.
- Ability to work at heights of up to 25 feet over land or water.
- Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
- Ability to respond to non-scheduled or emergency projects including nights, weekends and holidays.
- A valid drivers license.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Certification as an Engineer- in-Training (EIT), or a bachelors degree in civil or structural engineering.
- Knowledge of project development work such as field reviews; evaluating designs; data analysis; preparing/reviewing reports, estimates, plans, specifications, and special provisions.
- Proficient knowledge of project management practices.
- Knowledge of basic transportation engineering principles dealing with surveying, roadway geometrics, materials testing and sampling, and computer applications (such as Microstation and In-Roads).
- Knowledge of the surrounding area.

Important Notes
- This recruitment will be used to fill four (4) vacancies and may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
- The salary range listed includes the legislative approved general wage increase of 3%, effective on July 1, 2025.
- These positions offer flexible/hybrid remote work options.
- Regular travel to and from highway locations is necessary year-round for these positions.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements . Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
- This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Transportation Engineer 2 level, however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as a Transportation Engineer 1 , if not qualified at the highest level. The salaries for each level are:
- Transportation Engineer 2: $71,472 $96,144 Annually
- Transportation Engineer 1: $64,776 $87,048 Annually
