Title: General Maintenance Electrician

Position Type: Full-Time

Augustana University invites applications for a General Maintenance Electrician within our Facility Services department. This full-time role involves maintaining, repairing, replacing, and installing electrically powered systems across campus using best practices and technical knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain electrical circuits on campus.
  • Renew circuits either by isolating and cutting out defective wiring and replacing it with new wiring, or by splicing ends of broken wires.
  • Examines and tests elements of electrical systems to locate obvious faults, such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections, and worn motor brushes.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and order and pick up necessary items.
  • Inspects and tests electrical signal, communication and power circuits and equipment.
  • Performs skilled journeyman work as an electrician in maintenance, repair and renovation of buildings, equipment and utilities for all university departments.
  • Execute preventive maintenance program as per Facilities standards.
  • Prepare material lists for assigned tasks including non-stock and/or specialty items.
  • Respond to and take appropriate action to resolve emergency calls during scheduled and non-scheduled working hours; including holidays.
  • Attend and participate in required training for the use of personal protective equipment and comply with requirements for use of employer provided equipment.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Successful completion of an electrical apprenticeship program.
  • Must have a valid Journeyman or Master Electrician's License and three-years' experience as an electrician in a commercial setting.
  • Familiar with commercial electrical circuiting including medium voltage (4160 volts) power supplies, transformers, etc.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the principles, measures, standards, symbols, materials, tools and safety practices of the electrical trade.
  • Demonstrated competence installing, operating, maintaining and repairing wiring systems, motor controls, equipment and related apparatus with medium voltage systems.
  • Demonstrated competence accurately reading blueprints and wiring diagrams and sketching circuits.
  • A demonstrated understanding of basic computer programs similar to Microsoft Office Suite and e-mail.
  • Generator knowledge.
  • South Dakota driver's license and good driving record.

Desired Qualifications

  • Two years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) journeyman-level maintenance electrical experience with inside wiring is highly preferred.
  • Experience in buried and overhead medium voltage maintenance, switching, and terminating.
  • Experience trouble shooting and general knowledge of areas such as fire alarm systems, motor controls, commercial kitchen equipment, etc.
  • Experience balancing multiple work assignments, meeting deadlines, and exercising adaptability to changing priorities.
  • Experience with interfacing with a Computerized Maintenance Management System.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional weekend and evening shifts; on-call availability.
  • Physical demands include frequent bending, lifting (up to 65 lbs.), and standing.
  • Exposure to environmental elements (heights, confined spaces, outdoor weather).
  • Use of safety equipment like eye protection, gloves, and respirators.
