Job Summary

Operates heavy mechanized equipment and performs a variety of tasks in support of campus construction and maintenance projects. Maintains sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots as needed by performing skilled concrete repair and upkeep tasks. Also maintains roads with asphalt repair. This position will assist grounds department in maintaining streets and parking lots of leaves and debris. This position is considered essential personnel and may require storm duty as well as, possible on-call duties.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

+ Operates mini excavator, box blade, and bulldozers to gouge out, level, and distribute dirt and to push trees and rock from land for constructing roads, buildings, walks, handicap ramps, bike trails, and parking lots. Operates backhoe to open ditches for utility lines or pipes. Operates front end loader and dump truck to load and haul fill dirt to and from construction sites. Operates lull and fork lift to load and unload materials. Operate street sweepers and blowers to maintain a clean campus. Operates other mechanical devices such as concrete saw, concrete grinder, wacker packer, post hole auger, jack hammer, compressors, and chainsaws.

+ Assists in construction work by performing manual tasks that may include but not limited to finishing concrete, asphalt, gravel bases, cleaning streets from leaves and debris.

+ Coordinates and participates in construction projects such as grading; setting metal and wood forms for curbs and gutters in streets and parking lot construction; setting forms for walks, drives, and patios, and pouring and finishing concrete on curbs, gutters, driveways, parking lots, and floor slabs.

+ Services, performs preventative maintenance, and repairs on maintenance equipment to include tractors, back hoes, trucks, and forklifts and keeps equipment in excellent condition mechanically and clean in appearance.

+ Installing street sign posts, posts and chains, and concrete parking bumpers around campus.

+ Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Commercial Class D Driver's License.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

+ Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, University policies and procedures.

+ Knowledge of construction maintenance, repair, and operation of light and heavy equipment, including vehicles.

+ Ability to drive dump truck, tractors, sweepers, carts, university truck and trailers.

+ Ability to pick up tires, parts, vehicles, carts, etc. from dealerships and vendors.

+ Ability to repair potholes and roads using hot and cold patches of asphalt.

+ Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of highways and roads.

+ Knowledge of applicable safety requirements.

+ Knowledge of motor vehicle operations, traffic rules and regulations, and maintenance of motor vehicles.

+ Skill in the use of standard office equipment and software.

+ Skill in determining the kind of and use of standard tools and equipment needed to do a job.

+ Skill in performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.

+ Skill in managing ones own time.

+ Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
