Job Description
NOTE: This is an FRA-covered position. FRA-covered employees are those employees who have been assigned to perform Roadway Worker duties and are therefore subject to the random pool for monthly drug and alcohol testing.
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Performs the full range of maintenance and repairs, both electrical and mechanical, of all locomotives, locomotive cranes, shop forklifts, overhead cranes, generator sets, and stationary machinery.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inspects, troubleshoots, tests, repairs, performs maintenance, and changes components on mechanical and electrical systems on locomotives and cab cars. Replace defective engine components and troubleshoots and/or repairs fuel systems, voltage regulators for AC and DC generators, power supply circuits, electronic switching circuits, and speed recorders, wires and installs electrical conduits up to 2" efficiently. Performs locomotive scheduled maintenance and inspections to FRA regulations.
- Performs periodic inspections and light maintenance on Locomotive Shop forklifts, air compressors, overhead cranes, shop machinery, and generators.
- Rebuilds locomotive trucks, traction motors, and builds locomotive and car wheels sets, including wheel truing. Assists with locomotive crane work.
Factor 1 - Knowledge
Ability to inspect, repair, change components, and maintain a variety of electrical, mechanical railroad equipment including but not limited to: locomotive electrical systems; locomotive, fuel, cooling, and oil systems; overhead cranes and shop machinery; and cab cars. Knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of electronics, electricity, and mechanics, both in static and in dynamic states which has been demonstrated through past and current work experience. Ability to read, write, and communicate; interpret blueprints and schematics, work instructions, and other technical guides of varying degrees of complexity, i.e., regulations, field manuals, repair, and parts manuals. Ability and skill to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and machines which are common to the railroad industry. Knowledge of pertinent regulations such as, but not limited to, CFR, FRA, ARR, and OSHA.
Factor 2 - Responsibilities
Works under the supervision of the MGR, Locomotive & PTC Maintenance and shop supervisors, who set overall priorities, establishes the work load, and reviews completed work on spot check basis for adequacy and compliance with objectives of the assignment. Generally, works with minimum direct supervision and will be required to be self-motivated.
Factor 3 - Physical Effort
Lifts and carries tools, materials, and equipment which may, at times, exceed 50 pounds. Pushes and/or pulls objects weighing up to several hundred pounds. Requires walking, climbing, crawling, bending, and standing for extended lengths of time.
Factor 4 - Work Conditions
Work may be done indoors or outdoors in all types of conditions. Works on concrete, earth, metal, and wood surfaces in crowded areas near moving machinery and equipment. At times, these surfaces may be uneven, slippery, icy, muddy, and/or greasy. Heating, ventilation, and lighting in most areas may be poor. Exposure to electric arc flashes, varying degrees of hot and cold conditions, all common to the industry. Frequent exposure to dust, dirt, slag, grease, grime as well as loud noises, vibrations, gases, and fumes from petroleum products. Not uncommon to occasionally encounter chemical compounds such as acids or caustic solutions, all of which are common in the industry.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at a journeymen level and have experience as a Machinist/Mechanic or Electrician with four (4) years practical experience or has completed a four (4) year apprenticeship as mechanic/machinist/electrician. Working knowledge of both crafts preferred. Ability to inspect, repair, change components, and maintain a variety of electrical railroad equipment including, but not limited to, locomotive electrical systems, fuel, cooling, and oil systems, electrical, heating, and air conditioning systems. Knowledge of the basic principles of electronics, electricity, and mechanics is required. Ability to weld (GMAW, TIG, SMAW, and FCAW) is preferred. Must be able to read, write, and communicate; interpret blueprints and schematics, work instructions, and other technical guides of varying degrees of complexity. Must be capable of using a respirator. Must have a valid driver's license. Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card).

Alaska Railroad Corporation Benefits
The following briefly describes the main benefits available to regular employees of the Alaska Railroad Corporation. Actual benefits differ by bargaining unit.
Retirement Plans
ARRC Pension Plan - Participation is mandatory. You are automatically enrolled in the Plan when you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Employees contribute 9% of their Earnings on a pre-tax basis. The Railroad is exempt from participation in Social Security; however, Medicare Tax is withheld. Participants vest with 5 years of eligible Vesting Service which entitles one to receive a pension benefit at retirement age.
Tier 2 Description (Employees hired after July 1, 2015)
Normal Retirement Age is age 65, however, the plan allows one to retire as early as age 60. The formula for a monthly Normal Retirement Benefits is 2% x Final Average Earnings x all Credited Service.
Early retirement, survivor and disability benefits are available for vested participants.
401(k) Tax Deferred Savings Plan - Participation is optional. You may enroll once you meet the eligibility requirement of your bargaining unit. Depending on the bargaining unit, there may be an employer match.
457 Deferred Compensation Plan - Participation is optional for non-represented employees.
Insurance and Flexible Spending Plans
All plans are optional except the RR Dental Plan for bargaining unit employees.
Health Insurance Plan
A comprehensive health insurance plan, self-insured by the ARRC and administered by Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska. Coverage is also available for the employee's spouse and dependent children. ARRC and the participant share the premium cost. Bargaining unit employees are Eligibility after 90 days, and non-represented employees are eligible as of the date of hire.
The Railroad offers a Prefered Provider Organization plan (PPO Blue Essentials) and a Consumer Directed Healthcare Plan with a Health Saving Account (Gold Essentials). The Plans have the following features.
