Set up, operate, and adjust extruding presses and associated equipment to produce various polymer extrusions. Ensure that the products or profiles being produced meet all given specifications. This position is responsible for the operation of the extrusion lines. This will be accomplished with the help of utility operators assigned to the lines by the department's Team leader. This position will also be responsible for training new employees, providing further training for apprentice operators in the area, and reporting their progress to the supervisor. If issues hinder productivity, this must be communicated to the Team leader and/or the department manager immediately.
Responsibilities
- Set up, operate, monitor, and troubleshoot polymer extrusion equipment according to company specifications and quality standards.
- Interpret technical drawings, production orders, and specifications to ensure accurate production setup and execution.
- Train and mentor new employees and apprentice technicians on all aspects of extrusion operations, providing regular progress reports to supervision.
- Perform quality checks throughout production runs, measuring dimensions, inspecting surface finish, and verifying conformance to all specifications.
- To maintain product quality, make precise adjustments to machine settings, including temperature, pressure, speed, and tension.
- Collaborate with maintenance personnel to perform preventative maintenance according to schedules and document all maintenance activities.
- Dismantle, clean, inspect, and properly store dies and tooling components according to company procedures.
- Identify and communicate equipment issues, material deficiencies, or process improvements to management.
- Document production data accurately, including output quantities, scrap rates, and quality metrics.
- Ensure compliance with all safety procedures and proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Package, label, and prepare finished products according to specifications and transfer to designated storage areas.
- Maintain a clean, organized work area and properly dispose of waste materials.
- Assisted with inventory management of raw materials and communicated supply needs.
Minimum Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required; technical training or certification in plastics processing is preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in manufacturing, preferably in plastic extrusion operations.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to understand technical processes.
- Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments, including calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and production specifications.
- Basic computer skills for data entry and documentation purposes.
- Strong mathematical skills for calculating dimensions, weights, and production metrics.
- Physical ability to stand for extended periods (10+ hours) and lift/move materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Practical verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, including overtime and weekend shifts as needed.
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and capacity to make independent decisions.
- Willingness to work in an environment with elevated noise levels and temperatures.
- Basic math skills (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing) are necessary to perform job functions.
- Basic writing skills are required for the completion of daily production records.
- Basic verbal communication skills are required to transfer or interpret problem explanations and to receive and understand work assignments.
- Good motor skills (hand/eye coordination) are necessary for the efficient operation of this job.
- Good vision is required to inspect vinyl for visual quality.
