EQUIPMENT MECHANIC III
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is highly skilled work responsible for the efficient and accurate performance of a variety of automotive and heavy equipment repairs, including diesel engines and heavy duty snow removal equipment. A working knowledge of machinist tasks associated with the mechanic trade is required. General instructions are received from the Equipment Service Supervisor or a higher level administrator, regarding tasks to be performed, while allowing for considerable leeway in planning the details of each assignment. General instructions may be exercised over the work of lower level mechanics and/or other subordinate staff. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Performs skilled, advanced level mechanical repairs and maintenance on motor equipment such as diesel engines, automobiles, trucks, tractors, sweepers, lawn mowers, powersaws, graders, bulldozers, paving machines, snow loaders and other similar heavy duty motor equipment;
Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons and rings; Installs connecting rods and bearings;
Overhauls and repairs brake systems, differentials, transmissions, and front and rear axles of both heavy and diesel equipment;
Straightens frames, fenders and performs alignments;
Operates machine shop equipment including lathes, welders, grinders and power saws;
May operate motor equipment when assigned;
May determine when replacement parts are necessary and report need to the supervisor.
For incumbents of Broome County Departments: Performs New York State inspections as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Thorough knowledge of standard automotive and heavy equipment repair methods, terminology and tools of the trade;
Working knowledge of the machinist trade;
Skill in the use and care of automotive and heavy equipment servicing tools such as drill presses, wrenches, welders, torches, lathes and valve grinders;
Ability to adhere to safety precautions when using potentially harmful equipment, tools and machines;
Ability to make difficult repairs to heavy duty and other mechanical equipment such as overhauls of hydraulic systems, engines and transmissions;
Ability to work from plans, specifications, rough sketches and oral instructions;

Ability to lift heavy objects using hoist and levers; Ability to perform work involving strenuous effort; Ability to lay out work;
Willingness to respond to emergencies and work overtime; Willingness to work outside in adverse weather conditions;
When assigned to the Landfill: Willingness to be regularly exposed to unpleasant odors and working situations;
Mechanical aptitude;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR BROOME COUNTY DEPARTMENTS:
A)Graduation from a regionally accredited college, university or two-year technical school or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's Degree or certificate in automotive technology or mechanics, and one year of experience performing heavy equipment mechanical repairs, including diesel engines and heavy duty construction and/or snow removal equipment; OR
B)Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and three years of experience performing heavy equipment mechanical repairs, including diesel engines and heavy duty construction and/or snow removal equipment; OR
C)An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined between the limits of A) and B) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT FOR INCUMBENTS OF BROOME COUNTY DEPARTMENTS:
1) Possession of the appropriate level Commercial Driver's License.
IN ADDITION, FOR HIGHWAY DIVISION:
2) Possession of New York State Motor Vehicle Inspection Licenses #1 and #2.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (for other locations):
A)Graduation from a regionally accredited college, university or two-year technical school or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's Degree or certificate in automotive technology or mechanics, and three years of experience performing heavy equipment mechanical repairs, including diesel engines and heavy duty construction and/or snow removal equipment; OR

B)Five years of experience performing heavy equipment repairs, including diesel engines and heavy duty construction and/or snow removal equipment; OR
