Reports to: Director of Transportation

Terms of Employment: 12 Months

Salary- Pay grade 60

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

An employee in this class serves as a semi-skilled mechanic in the school garage. The employee performs mechanical work repairing and overhauling school buses and other fleet vehicles. Work includes repairing and performing preventative maintenance to gas and diesel motors and engines, performing metal fabrication and machine work to repair and fabricate parts and equipment, and operating a fuel truck to fuel buses. The work requires operation of various test equipment and hand tools in order to support the work activities. The employee is subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Work is performed under regular supervision. The employee receives assignments and instructions from the supervisor and is evaluated by observation and the quality and quantity of the work performed.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Operates fuel delivery vehicle, fuels vehicles on assigned route, and maintains accurate records of dispensed fuel and maintenance performed.
  • Participates with and assists other mechanics in areas of repair and replacement as needed.
  • Operates tire truck on assigned route, evaluates the condition of vehicle
  • tires, replaces tires as needed, and maintains accurate accounting of tire usage.
  • Performs minor vehicle sub-assembly checks and makes needed repairs or replacements.
  • Performs school bus body repair/replacement and preparation and painting.
  • Performs engine oil changes, filter replacement, and chassis lubrication.
  • Locates, diagnoses, and repairs minor mechanical problems.
  • Responds to site of fuel and tire related vehicle breakdowns and provides needed service.
  • Operates wrecker as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills and some mechanical or automotive servicing and light repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some knowledge of the servicing, parts replacement, fueling, greasing and lubrication requirements of vehicles and equipment.
  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety precautions surrounding mechanical work.
  • Some knowledge of the tools and equipment used in automotive repair shops.
  • Some knowledge of school bus and vehicles operation and maintenance.
    • Skill in the use of mechanical tools and equipment employed in repair and servicing work.
  • Ability to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement, and vehicle body repair.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate problems to supervisor

SPECIAL REQUIRMENT

Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license. .Class A with P/S/N endorsements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pound of force constantly to move objects.

Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment including close inspection of moving and small parts, using measurement devices, assembly, and fabrication of parts.
