HOURS: Flexible (20-40 hours per week based upon applicants availability) WAGE: $20.00 per hour PRIMARY FUNCTION:
  • Performs work, including but not limited to ensuring that Lafayette School Corporation school buses and service vehicles are in compliance with federal, state, and local safety standards.
REPORTS TO:
  • The Bus Mechanic reports directly to the Director of Transportation.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma
  • Two years of technical automotive/diesel training or four years of journeymen level experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Four years of experience in pupil transportation
  • Currently possess or eligible to earn a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with B, P, and Air Brake endorsements
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work involves standing, crouching, crawling, lifting and carrying
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to move relatively heavy objects and to perform manual labor for considerable periods of time
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Job is performed in an automotive/bus repair shop environment; work is frequently with dirty and greasy parts, contains diesel engine noise and fumes. Training on appropriate safety rules and protective equipment is required during the onboarding process.
WORK TASKS / RESPONSIBLITIES
  • Ensures that Lafayette School Corporation buses and service vehicles are in compliance with federal, state, and local safety standards
  • Performs preventive maintenance program for school buses and service vehicles
  • Assists with the school bus inspection program
  • Participates in an effective repair program for vehicle assemblies and parts
  • Supports transportation garage operations
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of school bus and vehicle operation and maintenance
  • Knowledge of the operating principles of diesel engines and other mechanical components of the school buses and service vehicles
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in vehicle repair shops
  • Knowledge of different mechanical, air, hydraulic, and electrical systems used on transportation equipment
  • Knowledge of Indiana Inspection Laws
PERFORMANCE SKILLS:
  • Craft skills such as welding for repair of buses and corporation owned vehicles
  • Coordinating skills such as ability to schedule buses for preventive maintenance and repair work; recordkeeping skills to maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance performed, safety inspection, and repair history of vehicles
  • Analytical skills to diagnosis mechanical problems
  • Computer skills to operate computerized diagnostic equipment and to troubleshoot engine or electrical problems with laptop computer
  • Manual skills for repair of shop equipment and to keep outside grounds and shop clean
  • Mechanical skills for vehicle operation, machine tool operation, repair and installation of equipment
  • Software/word processing skills for writing memos and recordkeeping, accessing state computer, and repair computer-controlled engines and brake system on buses
