Position Summary
The Welding Lab Supervisor is primarily responsible for monitoring and supervising the welding laboratory, and preparing the welding lab for student participation per faculty specifications prior to welding lab exercises. The Welding Lab Supervisor will also have part-time assigned teaching responsibilities each semester. This position must also maintain a cooperative relationship with the department faculty to assure consistency in instructing students welding techniques/skills required as stated in the respective welding course description and outline, and providing a positive learning experience for welding students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides quality lab supervision, ensuring a safe working and learning environment, maintaining inventory of equipment and supplies, basic maintenance of equipment and
tools, etc.
Coordinates with department faculty to ensure the proper types of equipment and materials needed for laboratory experiences are available prior to delivery of instruction
Maintains a cooperative relationship with the department faculty to assure consistency in tutoring specific welding techniques/skills required in welding course description and outline Teaches up to three welding courses per semester
Participate in student recruitment
Keep current on degree requirements in order to advise students majoring in Welding and other similar programs as necessary
Actively participate in annual and five-year academic program reviews including assessment of student learning at the course, program and institution levels for the classes being taught by the Lab Supervisor
Helps establish an engaged and active Welding program advisory board.
Schedules lab time for students and provides a positive learning experience for welding students
Assists department faculty in supervising student employees, including training, making work assignments
Operate within the framework established by CWC's policies, procedures, and practices.
Perform other reasonably related duties as directed or assigned.
Works with CWC BOCHES and high school Welding instructors to offer concurrent and/or dual credit courses within the CWC service area.
Position Specifications
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Associate's degree in Welding from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the US Department of Education.
Experience
Two years of directly related experience, preferably in a higher education setting.
Licenses/Certifications
Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or must work toward obtaining the American Welding Society's Certified Welding Inspector Certification within three years.
Equivalency Statement
Equivalent combinations of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired may be considered on a case-by-case
basis.
Desired Qualifications
- Prior welding experience in pipeline welding, oil/gas welding industry, railcar repair welding, or small business shop welding, and a professional working relationship with local welding industry.

Level of Supervision
This position operates under the direct supervision of the Welding Instructor.

Physical Requirements
Tasks require lifting of objects up to 50 pounds frequently.
Regular talking, hearing and seeing required in the normal course of performing the job.
Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform some essential functions.
Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Environmental Conditions
Work is performed in laboratory setting with exposure to mechanical, chemical and electrical hazards. Evening and/or weekend work may be required.
