ABOUT THIS POSITION

The Water Services Department oversees the management and operation of the City of Phoenix's collection, distribution, water, and wastewater treatment services for 2.5 million residents across five valley cities. Infrastructure includes 7,000 miles of water, 5,000 miles of sewer, eight treatment plants, 50,000 fire hydrants, and 90,000 manholes. We produce around 110 billion gallons of water annually, test nearly 200 substances, and reclaim almost all wastewater for irrigation, wetlands, and energy. The HVAC Technician II (Building Equip Op II) offers experienced HVAC/Mechanical Systems Technicians the opportunity to join our team in performing skilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of heating and air conditioning systems/components and other mechanical equipment, and fire/life safety systems in one or more public buildings.

The HVAC Technician II also exercises supervision over Building Equipment Operators I, Building Maintenance Workers, and other maintenance employees according to general or specific instructions received from a Building Equipment Supervisor or Building Maintenance Foreman. Work is reviewed daily through reports, logs, and conferences with the supervisor. This position often works independently, requiring a high degree of self-motivation and the ability to work alone.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will have the ability to:

  • Work independently and safely using standard HVAC technician tools and equipment, i.e. climbing ladders, electric and hydraulic lifts, power tools, hand tools, refrigerant recovery equipment).
  • Work in the field supervising and directing Building Equipment Operators I, and other maintenance support employees according to general or specific instructions received from a Building Equipment Supervisor.
  • Proficiently read and interpret blueprints, performance charts, control panels and PC terminals.
  • Use Building Automation Systems (BAS) to operate HVAC equipment and analyze the information to assist in diagnosing system issues.
  • Use various tools and equipment such as general mechanic tools, Volt Ohm Meter (VOM), and metal fabricating tools.
  • Give technical direction to employees and prioritize work assignments.

SALARY

Pay Range: $30.82 to $42.64 per hour.

Hiring Range: $30.82 to $40.61 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years of journey level experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of large, modern refrigeration and heating systems, supplemented by training in modern refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Five years of experience in the operation and maintenance of commercial and residential heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC).
  • Two years of experience in the maintenance and repair of central plant equipment, chilled water systems, cooling towers, and related components.
  • Additional experience in/with:
  • Maintenance and repair of boilers.
  • Maintenance and repair chilled water systems, cooling towers and related components.
  • Pipe fitting, brazing, soldiering, and welding various pipe materials.
  • Operating Building Automation Systems (BAS).
  • Working in a customer service-oriented environment.
  • Reading, interpreting and working from prints, sketches, diagrams.
  • Building Automation Systems such as Johnson Controls, Alerton, Andover's Continuum, Delta, and Trane.
  • SAP and MS Office applications (e.g., Word and Excel).
  • Maintaining and repairing evaporation cooling units (ECU).
  • Preventative maintenance programs and processes.
  • Computer Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Troubleshooting, repairing, replacing 3-Phase commercial/industrial equipment.
  • Fire and life safety systems, including monitoring and troubleshooting of BASE/EMS systems.
  • Variable Frequency Drives.
  • Industrial water treatment related to centralized chilled water plants for comfort cooling applications.
  • Servicing and repairing air handlers, fan coils, and variable air volume systems.
