The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking an Equipment Operator IIto support the construction of the St. Paul's Blue-Greenway. This position will work with our Parks and Forestry Operations to provide flood water management, water quality treatment, and recreational open space for new communities and surrounding areas

Department Hiring Salary Range: $41,231 - $43,292
Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Operates heavy equipment to include Surf Rakes (clean beaches), backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, and maintainers. This position also operates mowers, tractors, dump trucks, fork lifts, and other motorized equipment in grounds maintenance operations.
Maintains grounds and right of ways by collecting and delivering trash containers, mowing grass, raking leaves, digging holes, planting, pruning and maintaining trees and flower beds, mixing and applying chemicals, loading and applying mulch, weed eating, trimming, performing general care of landscape, grading athletic fields for game play, installing and maintaining turf, removing trees, grinding tree stumps, identifying plants and trees, cleaning up job sites, hauling topsoil, grading, removing snow, aerating lawns, cutting grass, trimming trees, removing dead limbs, removing storm damage, cutting back weeds, picking up and removing litter, refuse and debris from vacant lots.
Performs safety checks and minor preventative maintenance on equipment, including but not limited to, checking fluids, changing blades and daily inspections to insure equipment is safe to operate.
Other Duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
Two years' experience in operation of machinery needed for grounds maintenance and horticulture.
Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s):
- Valid Virginia Driver's License, required.
- Able to obtain Virginia Pesticide license within 6 months

Work Hours:Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM. Work hours may change seasonally, additional on-call schedule

Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
