Position Overview

The City of Wauwatosa is hiring an Assistant Construction Manager! This position provides direct support to Construction Manager in managing sanitary sewer, water main, storm sewer, roadway, and bridge construction projects for the City to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Represents the City in private development construction projects that include public improvements such as grading, paving, drainage and utility installation.

The pay range for this position is $90209.60 - $115273.60 annually, with the starting wage determined based on the candidate's qualifications and experience. We are also offering a sign on bonus of $2,500 for this Assistant Construction Manager opening. Essential Functions

The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Serves as a project lead in managing construction projects for the city to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Collaborates with City Engineering staff in the preparation of plans, specifications, cost estimates and contracts for public construction projects.
  • Assists with conducting analysis, preparing reports and overseeing work of consultants and contractors for construction projects.
  • Reviews in house designs for constructability issues; reviews any deviations from approved plans of construction and coordinates with the design engineer on acceptability.
  • Coordinates and leads preconstruction meetings with contractors and other City departments.
  • Assists in preparing RFPs, issuing purchase orders, contract modifications, and processing invoices/pay applications along with other duties associated with contract management.
  • Addresses complaints or inquiries on field operations.
  • Coordinates and participates in final walk-throughs of projects and recommends final acceptance to Citys Construction Manager.
  • Assures completion of all paperwork and assures appropriate processes are followed with respect to record drawings of completed construction projects.
  • May provide direction to the Citys Surveyors as well as consultant inspectors in the absence of the Construction Manager.
  • Provide direct oversight to City Engineering Technicians (Construction Inspectors).
Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements :

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program required.
  • A minimum of five years related engineering experience required., Experience in construction oversight and project management is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in sanitary sewer and water main construction in an urban environment strongly preferred.
  • Experience in roadway construction, including storm sewer, grading, and drainage, in an urban environment strongly preferred.
  • Past experience with contract management strongly preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Must be a Professional Engineer licensed in the State of Wisconsin or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • A valid Wisconsin Drivers License is required.

In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D preferred.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Knowledge of municipal water/wastewater/storm facilities and/or conveyance infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of public works design, drafting, surveying and construction.
  • Understanding of requirements for projects and ability to articulate those requirements.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; ability to learn other software.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize a variety of projects, and function under deadlines.
  • Critical thinking ability and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
