JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs the full range of skilled, journeyman level Electrician duties in order to support the education mission of the District and to enhance the education environment. The maintenance electrician will work as part of a team to Install, inspect, troubleshoot and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices and related systems for the school district.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs skilled maintenance and repair of building structures, equipment and facilities, with major emphasis on electric systems and components
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical wiring, fixtures control devices and equipment.
  • Diagnose, locate the cause of, and repair malfunctioning systems and components using test equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance through inspection of electrical systems, equipment and components.
  • Ensure all work performed adheres to all relevant organizational, and municipal safety regulations, codes and specifications.
  • Maintains accurate records using District provided work order system.
  • In coordination with other departments, will participate in larger maintenance and repair operations as needed.
  • Estimates, determines needs, and arranges for supplies and equipment in order to perform or schedule work assignments.
  • Promote quality workmanship and productivity.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and/or Director of Physical Properties advised of current maintenance situation and work schedules.
  • Other duties as directed by the Director of Physical Properties or assigns.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • General knowledge of building construction and systems, and repair terminology.
  • General knowledge of line voltage and low voltage electrical systems and maintenance trades in a commercial environment.
  • Ability to measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install rigid galvanized electrical conduit, using tools such as a pipe threader, conduit bender and other standard tools of the trade.
  • Ability to interact with supervisors, staff, vendors, co-workers and the public using a positive, collaborative approach.
  • Ability to problem solve and engage necessary staff/supervisors to address facility issues.
  • Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction or monitoring; sound judgment and decision making capabilities are essential.
  • Ability to coordinate, organize, schedule and assign work when necessary.
  • Ability to perform well under stress and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to perform all requirements of a preventive maintenance technician.
  • Numerical ability required to make proper calculations.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and specifications of new construction, installation, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Strong organizational ability

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

High school, trade and/or vocational school graduation and completion of union, private, military or trade school apprenticeship program that includes theory and on-the-job training.

Minimum of four (4) years’ work experience as a Journey-level electrician or equivalent work experience with an emphasis in a commercial, educational or facilities operations setting.

Preferred:Knowledge of public schools or university operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is medium to heavy. Routinely handles loads weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally handles loads weighing up to 100 pounds or more, using appropriate equipment and/or lifting techniques. Walks and stands most of the day. Stooping and climbing as required. Must be able to work at heights. Requires near-visual acuity and good color vision to inspect and approve repair and maintenance, read blueprints, building code manuals, and other documents. Works both inside and outside. The work environment may be subject to loud noise from machinery, equipment and tools. May be required to work long hours.

DRIVER’S LICENSE:

Employee shall have a valid driver’s license at the time of his/her employment with the Kansas City Kansas USD #500 School District. IF, at any time during his/her employment, the employee should lose their driver’s license and/or their driver’s license suspended for any reason, the employee shall immediately notify the Director of Physical Properties.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT/YEARLY REQUIREMENTS: Employee shall meet all the pre-employment and yearly requirements as specified in the Policies of the Board of Education.

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Classified Human

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 261 days

SALARY: Based on the USD #500 Salary Schedule.

FLSA STATUS: HOURLY, NON-EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: Director of Physical Properties
