Diesel/Gasoline Mechanic - Open Until Filled

Under the direction of the assigned Lead Mechanic or Supervisor, the incumbent performs skilled mechanical work on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, performing a variety of mechanical, preventive maintenance and related work to ensure effective readiness and operation of the County's vehicles including but not limited to autos, pickups, trucks, tractors, road maintenance and sewer equipment. Other assignments include servicing and Diagnosing equipment, repairing and mounting tires, perform seasonal checkups, steam cleaning and washing, as well as major and minor tune-ups and adjustments, modifying and fabricating equipment and parts, welding broken items and maintaining tools and the shop area in a clean and orderly condition.

Core business hours are from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled call-out emergencies. Work alternates and emergency shifts as situations dictate, as well as respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed. Occasional standby and call-back may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR PERFORMANCE OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

**Required Education and Experience**

- Associate's degree in automotive/diesel technology or related field; **AND **two years recent experience as a heavy-duty diesel and/or gasoline mechanic; **OR**

- Four years of recent experience as a heavy-duty diesel and/or gasoline mechanic.

- Relevant work experience demonstrating required knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for educational requirements. Work experience is essential and cannot be replaced by additional education.

**Preferred Experience**

- Master Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certificate or equivalent.

- Experience in electrical/electronics, hydraulics, and hydraulics systems with air or low voltage control circuits

- Metal Fabrication, welding and/or machine shop experience.

- Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the operation of related equipment with Endorsement N or X and air brake restriction removed.

**Driving Requirements **

The successful incumbent must meet the driving requirements of this position and submit a copy a current driving record/abstract (from state of residency) to review for eligibility to drive for Kitsap County prior to employment. The successful incumbent must obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License prior to hire and maintain a satisfactory driving record as outlined in the Kitsap County Vehicle Use Policy. This position is categorized as:

1. **CDL Driver:** Operating County owned vehicles and CDL vehicles. Successful candidate must [have a current or obtain within 12 months of employment] a Washington Class A endorse N or X with air brake restriction removed. Prior to CDL Assignment:

- CDL drivers must submit a driving abstract and a current medical card.

- CDL Drivers in accordance with federal regulations and Kitsap County Drug and Alcohol Policy and Procedures for CDL Drivers, no employee will be allowed to operate CDL vehicles or equipment in this position for Kitsap County until he/she has successfully passed a breath alcohol test and urine drug screening; and enter into a random DOT regulated drug and alcohol testing process.
