Primary Purpose of the Position:
The North Carolina Zoo is expanding! We are seeking a self-motivated Maintenance/Construction Technician for our Preventative Maintenance and Electrical (PM&E) Maintenance sections to include Plumbing, Electrical and HVAC sections.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Performing a variety of semiskilled tasks with a primary focus in plumbing repairs and installation, preventative maintenance duties on pump stations (Lubrication, Strainers, Valves). Secondary responsibilities will include assisting electricians with running conduit, pulling wire, repairing lights, etc., assisting with preventative maintenance and repair duties with HVAC (Filters, Coil Cleaning, Lubrication, etc.) and any general park maintenance.
- Performing other tasks as needed and may be reassigned to a different group of trades such as general maintenance and caging depending on the needs of the organization.
- Using a computer for work order processing, time entries, performance evaluations, and/or product research, etc.
- Position/Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to work weekend and holiday on-call rotations, and some after work shifts.
- Position is considered "Essential/Mandatory Staff" and required to work on adverse weather days and during zoo emergencies.
- Must participate in occupational health program due to potential exposures to zoonosis.
- Must have good physical agility, strength, good hearing and vision, and perform physically demanding labor in extremes of weather and challenging physical environments e.g. animal enclosures.
- Must have ability to lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally, pounds, walk, stand, see animals & exhibits for observation and safety as well as hear animal's sounds, radio communication and emergency situations with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Must be able to work in confined spaces.
- Must have a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
- Must be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic.
- Must have very good written and oral communication skills.
- Must have good interpersonal relations/teamwork skills.

Qualified candidates will have:
- Demonstrated experience in plumbing repairs and installation, preventative maintenance duties on pump stations (Lubrication, Strainers, Valves).
Management Preference:
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the principles and techniques in PM&E Maintenance in one or both of the following trades:
- Electrical
- HVAC

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma
AND
one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas;

Necessary Special Qualification: May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Veteran's and National Guard Preference

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS), along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.
Applicants who are former member of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard, with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22, along with the state application.
