Primary Responsibilities for the Supervisor II-Met Lab-Preparation Area :

  • Supervises laboratory practices, procedures, and processes.
  • Job responsibilities involve managing, directing, and coordinating the efforts of day-to-day activities of the Met Lab Preparation Area, as it pertains to saw cutting, heat treating, machining, inspection, and analysis of materials per industry specification in a cost-effective manner that supports both our internal and external customers.
  • Ensures maintenance of equipment and safety of laboratory users. Coordinates schedules and activities.
  • Interfaces with internal technical personnel, Customers and outside Quality governing bodies to ensure preparation of testing specimen is in compliance with industry standards.
  • Assign work to laboratory preparation area (Saws, Heat Treatment, Machine Shop) personnel and adjust assignments to ensure the accurate and timely completion of preparation, inspection and analysis on daily basis.
  • Coordinate the procurement of supplies and services, which includes outside laboratory testing if required for the efficient operation of the assigned area.
  • Update, maintain and write Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to support testing methods in assigned areas.
  • Perform prescribed routine preventative maintenance checks, corrective maintenance and make adjustments as required on various sample preparation machinery and auxiliary equipment.
  • Register new test specimens into the electronic laboratory management system.
  • Properly identify samples and retain or discard these samples according to standard operating procedure.
  • Maintain these instruments according to intervals required by SOP.
  • Review test data and apply appropriate corrections based on certified reference material analyses or other statistical means.
  • Supervises group leaders and lab employees. Provides coaching and mentoring to develop team and achieve department goals. May take a leadership role in lieu of manager as needed in personnel actions such as hiring, performance and disciplinary measures.
  • Involvement with department specific capital projects to research and management of new machinery/equipment in the Metallography Lab.
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Accurately perform analysis of furnace and product specimens.

Requirements for the Supervisor II-Met Lab-Preparation Area

  • High school diploma.
  • Accredited Technical/Trade School Machining focus preferred.
  • 7+ years experience in Metallurgical staff or Quality Lab
  • 1-2 years Supervisory position required, 3+ years preferred
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement and root cause problem solving method
