Job Description

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Operations Facilities Manager, responsible for the mechanical operations, maintenance and water chemistry for the Sand Hollow Aquatics Center and the Outdoor City pool, as well as overall maintenance of the Facilities.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

  1. Responsible for mechanical operations and maintenance of City pool, hydro-tube, and Sand Hollow Aquatic Center, including deck and pad surface, water chemistry, pumps, water features, and all related equipment.

  2. Supervises, schedules, and trains assigned maintenance staff in mechanical operations, water chemistry, and pump operations and all maintenance of City swimming pools.

  3. Operates pool equipment, including pump motors, valves, and boilers, according to standard operating procedures and manufacturer's recommendations.

  4. Maintains chemical balance of pool water at all times. Performs alkalinity, PH, hardness, chlorine residual, saturation index and other chemical-related tests. Responsible for providing monthly water samples for laboratory analysis to ensure the safety of water for public swimming.

  5. Operates and maintains chemical feed systems, makes chemical dosage decisions, and sets corresponding feed rates through the system's field computer.

  6. Assists the Facilities Manager and Southwest Utah Public Health Department with inspections to ensure public health and safety. Performs daily testing and maintenance according to Utah State public

health codes and regulations.

  1. Implements safety procedures and OSHA regulations, including confined space, lock out/tag out procedures, and respirator protection, under the direction of the facilities manager.

  2. Inspects pools, buildings, and equipment for cleanliness, maintenance needs, effective operations, and risk management issues. Develops and implements scheduled and unscheduled maintenance programs.

  3. Performs various duties to maintain the cleanliness of the pool interior and surrounding areas.

  4. Maintains, repairs, and replaces simple electrical components; maintains light fixtures, ; and monitors mechanical apparatus, such as motors, belts, pulleys, etc., to assure proper operation.

  5. Maintains a high level of work performance in appearance and workmanship, while maintaining health and safety standards. Keeps work areas clean, safe, and organized.

  6. Keeps inventory of pool and building supplies and equipment in stock and their consumption rate. Submits a list of supplies needed on a timely basis.

  7. Completes necessary written reports to document maintenance, vandalism, incidents, inspections, and other work activity.

  8. Assists the Facilities Manager with budget information for pool operations, building maintenance, and capital improvements.

  9. Supervises assigned part-time employees to prepare the City pool for each season.

  10. Develops work plans, priorities, and schedules; assigns work activities; monitors workflow; reviews work progress, products, methods, and procedures; and tracks data such as time, materials, and equipment use records.

  11. Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Moderately heavy physical activity. Required to stand, walk, or sit uncomfortably for extended periods. Moderate exposure to some disagreeable elements such as heat, cold, fumes, dampness, noise, or dust. Required to push, pull, or lift medium heavy weights. Intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Minimum of two (2) years full time paid work experience performing duties related aquatic facility maintenance.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Possess a valid driver license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.
  • Must possess valid certification as Aquatic Facility Operations (AFO) or Certified Pool Operators (CPO) and CPR/First Aid Certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Utah state pool code and regulations.
  • OSHA rules and regulations.
  • Pumps, motors, and related machinery.
  • Pool mechanical systems and water chemistry.
  • Mechanical systems, maintenance and repair of plumbing, and general building maintenance skills.
  • Hand and power tools, methods, and materials used in general repair and maintenance work.

Skills:

  • Must have an understanding of pool mechanical systems and chemistry.

Ability to:

  • Diagnose, problem solve, and adjust pool operating conditions according to fluctuating bather loads and conditions.
  • Perform varied work tasks both in and underwater.
  • Recognize, prevent, and solve potential public health and safety issues.
  • Lift 80 lbs.
  • Relate well with the general public, contractors, supervisors, and fellow employees.
