The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 2 (In-Training) to play a key role in supporting the agencys Safety Program. In this position, you will perform journey-level inspections, diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and both major and minor repairs on a wide range of vehicles and equipment used in highway maintenance and construction. You may also provide guidance or training to Equipment Technician 1 staff.
Unusual or complex issues are elevated to the Technician Lead or Supervisor, along with recommended solutions. This role directly supports WSDOTs mission by ensuring that critical equipment and vehicles remain in safe, reliable condition to keep Washingtons roadways safe for the traveling public.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Equipment Technician 2 will:
- Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel, gasoline, electric, and alternative-fuel engines to ensure reliable equipment performance.
- Diagnose and repair manual, automated, and computer-controlled transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, torque converters, and other driveline components.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, and maintain complex hydraulic systems, including pumps, motors, valves, hydrostatic drives, and control systems.
- Maintain and repair various brake systems including air, mechanical, hydraulic, ABS, and power-assist components, as well as traction control and stability systems.
- Repair and service suspension, steering, cooling, HVAC systems, wheels, tires (including TPMS), and other powertrain and chassis components.
- Perform diagnostic and repair work on specialized equipment used for snow and ice removal, paving, excavation, catch basin cleaning, marine operations, and mobile traffic control.
- Maintain fueling stations and perform repairs on refueling site equipment.3
- Troubleshoot and repair all electrical/electronic systems, automotive and specialized.
- Fabricate, weld and install additional equipment.
- Use M-5 Fleet Management System.
Qualifications
This position is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 2 (EM 2) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the positions at a lower level (EM 1) depending on qualifications, providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal in-training plan.
At minimum, at least one (1) of the following are required :
- Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey-level mechanic. OR
- Journey-level standing as a heavy equipment mechanic, demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship OR
- Journy-level standing as recognized by a labor union, OR
- One (1) year of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment.
In addition to one (1) of the above, the following are also required :
- Ability to read and understand repair manuals and other printed materials.
- Ability to learn new systems and teach/mentor employees assigned to them.
- Shall have basic Personal Computer knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software.
- Technician 3s shall participate and ensure a safe workplace be provided and assure correct Personal Protective Equipment be used. They shall attend and participate in regular safety meetings.
- Must obtain class B CDL (without restrictions) with endorsement N and without air brake restriction within 12 months of hiring. WSDOT will assist in training for licensing requirements.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment, light vehicles and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding/fabrication.
- ASE certifications in Automotive and/or Heavy-duty equipment.
- DOT brake certifications.
- A/C certification.
- Class B CDL with N and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restriction.
- High School Diploma or GED

- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. - This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Equipment Technician 2 level; however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as Equipment Technician 3. if not qualified at the highest level. The salaries for each level are:
- Heavy Equipment Mechanic 2: $80,820 $93,804 Annually
- Heavy Equipment Mechanic 1: $73,284 $84,984 Annually
