  1. GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs a variety of tasks involving semi-skilled and skilled mechanical work, as well as related administrative duties, to ensure the effective maintenance, repair, and operation of the City of Kalispells vehicles and mechanical equipment.

  1. SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the supervision of the Central Garage Supervisor.

  1. SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None generally.

  1. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Maintenance and repair (90%)

  1. Ensure the maintenance directions and procedures determined by the Central Garage Supervisor are faithfully, efficiently and safely carried out.

  2. Operates an assortment of diagnostic instruments, computer systems, and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.

  3. Tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment.

  4. Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary items and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.

  5. Repairs and maintains power train and drive train systems including brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.

  6. Cuts and welds metal and performs body repair, touch up and related work. Fabricates tools, parts, pieces, etc. as needed to service and repair vehicles and equipment.

  7. Changes and repairs tires and tubes.

  8. Performs inspections and routine maintenance on city vehicles and equipment including changing oil, filters and lubricating vehicles as necessary.

  9. Evaluates status of mechanical equipment or vehicles and performs or schedules needed repairs.

  10. Conducts various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.

  11. Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.

Administrative (5 %)

a. Working with the Central Garage Supervisor; prioritizes work/work orders to ensure vehicles, equipment repairs, and maintenance are performed in organized fashion based on the needs of respective departments and City of Kalispell operations.

b. Prepares a variety of records as required relating to inspections, maintenance activity and repairs, etc. to the citys vehicle fleet.

c. Daily utilization of fleet software used for tracking information on maintenance, service, and repair for all city fleet.

d. Assists Central Garage Supervisor in purchases of equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance by purchase order.

e. Provides detailed updates on repairs and schedules to the Central Garage Supervisor and Department Heads.

  1. PERIPHERAL DUTIES: (5%)

a. Serves on various City crews as assigned for cross training and to provide assistance to water, street, sewer, solid waste, wastewater, traffic signs and signals, and parks.

b. Performs other duties as assigned.

c. May serve as a member of various employee committees.

  1. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience :

a. Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent.

b. Three (3) years of related experience in a commercial fleet shop setting.

c. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

a. Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics;

b. Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding; price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment;

c. Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities;

d. Working knowledge of the practices, safety procedures, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.

e. Skilled in operation of listed tools and equipment.

f. Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures;

g. Ability to maintain effective accounting procedures;

h. Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion;

i. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;

j. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, other city departments, vendors and the public.

  1. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

a. Valid Montana Driver's license and CDL certification Class B, tanker endorsed, or equivalent license issued by another state and the ability to obtain Montana CDL certification within 6 months of hire date.

b. Must also possess general tools for position.

  1. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, truck mounted crane, forklift, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio.

      5. The employee frequently works around odorous equipment including solid waste trucks, sewer trucks, and sludge trucks.
