Under general supervision performs a variety of skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work on City vehicles including a variety of light and heavy equipment, automobiles, trucks, semi's, and performs field service. This class represents the journey working level responsible for the maintenance and repair of City motorized equipment.

This description is intended to indicate the essential functions and levels of work difficulty of the position and is not intended to describe in detail all of the positions specific duties and responsibilities nor exclude other duties of similar level or difficulty. Additionally, it is not intended to limit managements rights to assign, direct, and control the work of employees under their supervision.

Conducts preventive maintenance inspections and locates defective or malfunctioning equipment, reads and interprets technical manuals, schematic diagrams and uses electronic diagnostic equipment in order to conduct maintenance and repair tasks.

Performs the necessary repairs on gas-powered and diesel engines, stationary and portable generators, transmissions, differentials, and clutches; repairs or replaces components such as generators, alternators, distributors, relays, lights, computer processors, hydraulic valves, and controls

Performs maintenance tasks including repairing or replacing faulty parts, tuning engines, replacing injectors and diesel injection pumps, checking electrical systems, repairing short circuits, checking and adjusting wheel alignments, and balancing and changing tires.

Maintains police and fire vehicles and accessories in safe operating condition. Installs specialized police equipment in police cars.

Prepares and/or maintains records/files of service and repairs completed, time spent on service, processes receipts for recordkeeping, uses and maintains a credit/purchasing card; uses a computer or tablet to input data for all of the above activities and processes.

Repairs mechanical defects in fire, automotive, construction, and other mechanical equipment; repairs electronic parts and equipment including electronic computer-controlled systems and electric DC systems; rebuilds and overhauls engines; rebuilds front-ends including front-wheel drive components; grinds valves; and adjusts fuel, ignition, transmission, and drive systems.

Assist with maintenance and repairs of fueling sites, inventories, and ordering.

Maintains backup generators.

Must be adaptable and a strong team player.

High school diploma or equivalent. Four (4) years of professional experience in the maintenance and repair of a variety of light, medium and heavy duty motorized equipment. Note: An equivalent combination of related training and experience may be considered.

Possession of or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of appointment a valid Class A State of Nevada Motor Vehicle Operators License with tanker endorsement.

Must possess or have ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment, forklift certification.

All required licenses and certifications are conditions of employment. Required licenses and certifications must remain valid and in effect throughout incumbency.

Must pass a nationwide fingerprint-based record check, and a wants/warrants check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of: principles and practices of inspection, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of automobiles, trucks, semi's, and a variety of heavy & light maintenance equipment; methods, tools, and equipment used in performing skilled maintenance and repair on internal combustion and diesel engines, components, electronic fuel infection and computer-controlled systems, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and air systems; safe work practices.

Ability to diagnose various mechanical malfunctions and repair a wide variety of equipment and vehicles; read and interpret manufacturers' service and repair manuals; make estimates of repair costs; maintains records; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; accurately enter data and proofread materials; and follow written and verbal instructions.

Skilled in automotive and diesel engine repair, proficient in diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, electrical, brake (air, hydraulic, ABS), HVAC and transmission systems.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

General Physical Requirements Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds unassisted.

Physical Activities The worker performs physically demanding manual work in climbing, crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, kneeling, lifting, pushing and/or pulling heavy objects in the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment and vehicles.

Visual Acuity The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or heavy equipment; to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly of fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes; to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, thoroughness of work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.

Working Conditions The worker is subject to adverse weather conditions; toxic agents and hazards associated with the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment and vehicles.
