Heavy Truck Mechanic

Performs responsible advanced level skilled mechanical work on a variety of heavy trucks with a focus on solid waste collection trucks including boom grapple trucks and leaf collection trucks. Will also perform work on other City vehicles and equipment as needed.
  1. Performs preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of heavy truck and equipment focusing on boom trucks, grapple trucks, and leaf vacuum trucks, and other vehicles and equipment as needed.
  2. Proper diagnosis of a variety of mechanical issues with heavy trucks gas and diesel uses service manuals, on-line manuals, and contact with manufacturer mechanics to repair equipment.
  3. Makes necessary repairs and adjustments, replaces worn or defective parts.
  4. Fabricates and repairs equipment utilizing welding equipment.
  5. Operates equipment such as lift jacks, tire changers, air guns, battery chargers, wrenches, cranes, air compressors, welding units, and other hand tools.
  6. Will be required to operate a service truck for road calls. Knowledge and understanding of hoist crane, welder and generator.
  7. Lubricates, repairs and replaces parts and filters; cleans and replaces spark plugs, installs radiator hoses, and replaces belts.
  8. Changes, repairs and replaces tires; replaces and checks brakes and rotors, replaces hoses, etc.
  9. Performs complex repairs on (but not limited to) electrical, electronic, drive train, exhaust, transmission, brake, hydraulic systems, steering and suspension, pneumatic systems and air conditioning.
  10. Prepares work orders and records of maintenance and repair activities; may be required to maintain warranties and other related documents.
  11. Clean and maintain the shop by cleaning all bays, removing trash and debris, sweeping floors and properly disposing of all supplies and used materials.
  12. Performs North Carolina vehicle safety inspections.
  13. Performs related duties as required.
Required:
  • Graduation from high school supplemented by community college coursework in mechanical and/or electrical trade skills, and continuing education in the maintenance and repairs of vehicles and heavy equipment and experience in repairing automotive and power-driven equipment or equivalent experience in the field. Minimum of five years of responsible heavy truck and diesel equipment experience is preferred.

Special Requirement:
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • Possession of appropriate certification for air conditioning coolant recycling.
  • Possession of North Carolina safety inspections certification.
  • Possession of an ASE Mechanical Certification in gas and/or diesel engines.


Specific License or Certification
  • Must possess a minimum of a CDL permit, with the ability to obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL)within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to learn routes and navigate in the City of Albemarle.
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and perform repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to perform mechanical non repetitive work, distinguish the work performed at an arm's reach, and read diagrams and repair manuals
