Alamo Group Inc. is accepting applications to fill a Mechanical Engineer position at its Advanced Technology Center located in Huntsville, AL. Under general direction, the R&D Mechanical Engineer will collaborate with the Alamo Group Advanced Technology Center and business unit Engineers to evaluate and design advanced technology products. The Mechanical Engineer/tech, R&D will design various mechanical components needed for advanced technology efforts of chassis and Alamo Group business units' products.
The Mechanical Engineer will:
- Collaborate with team to learn new skills, knowledge and apply to projects producing results greater than individual efforts and ability.
- Learn and acquire skills to augment and fill gaps to perform essential functions.
- Plan, conceptualize, design, and integrate various hybrid electric systems into truck chassis and other Alamo Group products as part of a team.
- Design electromechanical devices as part of a team.
- Initiate, develop, document, and implement testing processes and perform testing and validation of new designs.
- Work in partnership with multiple business units to understand products and collaborate on solutions.
- Analyze structure of designed components.
- Modify or re-design products and various structures to accommodate prototype development.
- Replace and redesign hydraulic systems to utilize electric motors or maximize efficiency where possible.
- Position and mount electric drive components with respect to space claim, NVH, thermal and electrical criteria.
- Layout of cooling, battery pack, routing of high voltage wires.
- Drive design choices to maximize safety and value to the company.
- Research and continuously learn new technologies available with the goal of incorporating into current and new product designs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will have/be:
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team, learn and adapt quickly to new information.
- Demonstrated ability to design sheet metal and machined parts for modifying or creating new products.
- Working knowledge of rotating machine designs and mechanisms using bearings, rotating shafts, gears, while considering sideloads, thrust loads, vibrations etc.
- Demonstrated proficiency in CAD. SolidWorks is preferred.
- Demonstrated abilities to manage multi-level BOM using CAD system or enterprise manufacturing system. i.e. JDEdwards, SAP, etc.
- Ability to read, interpret and create blueprints, schematics, operator's manuals, and assembly instructions.
- Ability to perform basic measurements using tape measure, protractor, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring devices.
- Skilled and proficient with the use of personal computers; including JDE, and standard office software (i.e., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, Visio, Project, etc.)
- Knowledge of metal fabrication and welding equipment and processes with familiarity with MIG, TIG and plasma cutters.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written. Ability to communicate with various levels within the organization.
- Strong planning and project management skills with the ability to work well under pressure and manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Demonstrated ability to provide timely, detailed, results oriented products.
- Able to work irregular and/or long hours that may include weekends and/or holidays as schedules dictate.
- Able to travel independently by common air carrier and automobile.

Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field is preferred but not required. Experience equivalent to a degree is highly valued.
Minimum 3-5+ years previous experience in a metal fabricating and/or complex mechanical assembly production environment required.
Working Conditions:
This position will typically spend some time in the field with products, sometime designing in the office at a desk, and some time will be spent in the prototype shop working on equipment, trouble shooting, or building projects for the first time. Hands on work is expected along with use of shop technicians for tasks that do not require direct involvement.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus. Standing, walking and some lifting while traveling and attending trade shows and demonstrations.
