The mechanic maintains, repairs, and modifies fleet equipment comprised of various light, medium, and heavy automotive as well as specialized mechanical equipment and machinery, including heavy equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions:
Troubleshoot equipment and vehicles to determine the need for repair.
Maintain and service county vehicles and equipment.
Repair county vehicles when necessary.
Maintain and repair tires used for county vehicles.
Perform welding and metal fabrication work where necessary.
Comply with Elko County policies and Department Procedures.
Accurately completes work assignments in a timely manner.
Advise supervisor of project work status.
Be available for callouts and overtime.
Communicates tactfully, both orally and in writing, with co-workers and the general public.
Listens carefully and responds appropriately.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
This position has been identified as safety-sensitive and is subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol screening pursuant to county policy.
Must obtain a Nevada Class A CDL Drivers license within six months of employment.
All licenses and certifications are required to be current and maintained for continued employment.

Making and verifying arithmetical computations with accuracy and speed.
Using the tools and equipment listed below.
Abilities
Write and prepare work orders as well as document conditions of equipment, using a computer maintenance program.
Work independently in a field environment, occasionally during emergency conditions.
Diagnose mechanical failures and make repairs as needed using the appropriate tools and parts.
Repair and replace tires using air-operated equipment.
Read and understand automotive and equipment manuals and schematics, including electrical and hydraulic.
Perform metal fabrication work as needed.
Use various diagnostic and testing equipment.
Use hand tools, electric and gas welding equipment, and air-operated tire equipment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
An employee in this position must meet the following physical requirements upon application:
Work is performed in shop maintenance or outdoor setting.
Hand-eye coordination is necessary to manipulate tools and operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to communicate verbally and listen, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, climb, and work in confined or awkward spaces.
The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 100 pounds with proper equipment.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus as well as distinguish colors.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
The employee is exposed to extreme temperatures, wet and/or humid conditions, frequent travel, extreme weather conditions, noise, electrical shocks, hazardous chemicals, electrical currents, gases, dust, and noxious odors.
Tools and equipment used include personal computer, printer, scanner, telephone, calculator, and other associated office equipment, and diagnostic and testing equipment, gas and arc welding equipment, engine analyzers, and tire equipment.
Incumbent will occasionally be asked to travel in a passenger vehicle.
