SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE

The Senior Ironworker Superintendent will be responsible for overseeing our union field ironworker staff for all our steel scopes of work including Reinforcing Steel, Post Tensioning, Precast Erection, Structural Steel, Miscellaneous Metals, Mass Timber Erection, or any other specialty work claimed by the ironworker’s union.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

General Duties:

· Oversees all union Ironworker Superintendents, Foreman, Journeyman, and Apprentices.

· Will conduct all midyear and end of year performance reviews for Ironworker Superintendents and Foreman

· Plan and Organize internal Ironworker meetings / outings.

· Manage resource planning, recruitment, training, retainment, and succession planning of the ironworker workforce.

· Main point of contact for Ironworker Union Relations.

· Participate in union meetings and Union review contracts with C.D. Smith Contract representative.

· Research and Test new Technology to help aid the efficiency of field erection.

· Participate in industry conferences and trade events as required.

· Participation in recruitment and career fairs as required.

· Develops and maintains good working relationships with a variety of people, including owners, managers, designers, supervisors, tradespersons, and craft workers.

· Build relationships with local fabricators, suppliers, and construction management firms to ensure we have the opportunities for steady, consistent work for our ironworker staff.

· Collaborates with internal ironworker staff, union officials, construction managers, fabricators and design professionals to discuss and resolve problems, including work procedures, complaints, and construction or design issues.

· Upholds our American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) certification program. Manages and trains Quality Control Inspectors (QCI) within the organization to ensure compliance and consistency throughout the organization.

Manages the AISC quality control process including initial kickoff meetings, certifications, surveys, tolerances, tracking field installation inspection guide, welding procedures, audits, sequence turnover process, and closeout process.

Can collaborate with testing agencies to ensure all required inspections are completed.

Preconstruction:

· Coordinate with the estimators to assign manhours at bid time for all steel scopes of work.

· Develop sequence/ logistics plans and participate in phase pull planning for all steel scopes of work.

· Review shop drawing constructability is in line with a safe and productive erection process.

· Can provide constructability review of connection details to ensure efficiency.

· Helps Superintendents Plan their Delivery schedules and logistics coordination

· Develops and manages the schedule for steel erection activities.

· Works with the crane manager to develop crane & rigging plans for each project

· Reviews bracing, rigging, and crane selection.

· Reviews the stability engineering and required submittals to be incorporated into the overall sequence plan.

· Visits projects prior to ironwork starting to ensure everything is ready and coordinate start dates.

· Assigns manpower to the ironworker crews to ensure they meet productivity rates and schedules.

Construction:

· Responsible for overall profitability and man-hours for all steel jobs.

· Manages productivity and trend charting to compare estimated hours vs projected / actual hours. Manages / Tracks / Adjusts Productivity Rates.

· Will work on site to start up all new jobs regarding the steel scope. Will stay on site as long as needed to ensure the scope of work will be completed successfully.

· Will guide younger ironworker superintendents on site to properly train and mentor them.

· Coordinates with Steel Superintendents to Manage the erection and detailing on site.

· Regularly visits all jobs that have self-performed ironwork being done.

· Will be on site as issues arise to manages and lead actions that are necessary due to constructability issues, fabrication issues, productivity issues, delays, bad weather, or emergencies at construction sites.

Closeout:

· Submits lessons learned for all projects after ironwork is complete. Cross references previous lessons learned at the preconstruction phase of upcoming projects to ensure there is not a repeated issue.

· Analyzes actual productivity rates and houses a database for all future work.

· Participates in project closeout meetings as requested.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· Union Ironworker Superintendent status with standard union ironworker requirements being met.

· 15+ years of large-scale commercial construction experience required with 10+ years in a Supervisory Position.

· American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 Structural Steel Welding Certification

  • Willingness to participate in Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) training.

· American Welding Society (AWS) D1.4 Reinforcing Steel Welding Certification

· Post Tensioning Institute (PTI) Level 1 Unbonded PT Installation Certification.

  • Willingness to participate in the Level 2 Unbonded PT Installer & Inspector Certification.

· Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Category S1 - Simple Structural System Erector Certification

  • Willingness to participate in the Category S2 – Complex Structural Systems Certification

· OSHA 30

· First Aid / CPR Certified

· Competent person for Fall Protection & Crane Signaling

· Qualified Rigger

· Certified to operate numerous pieces of equipment such as a forklift, Aerial Lift, or Boom Lift

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Expert in steel erection, mass timber erection, precast erection, rebar placement, and post tensioning. Can properly mentor and train ironworker staff to perform these scopes of work.

· Thorough understanding of steel/precast/rebar/post tensioning shop drawings.

· Thorough understanding of union contracts

· Thorough understanding of project contracts, architectural and structural plans, specifications, and regulations.

· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

· Proficient in Microsoft Office or related software, Revisto, and Bluebeam.

· Ability to remain flexible and efficient in a fast-paced environment.

· Ability to make intelligent and quick decisions, working well under pressure, and when faced with unexpected occurrences or delays.

· Ability to effectively multitask while analyzing and solving problems.

· Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.

· Ability to travel and work in remote locations during the week as required for the tasks listed above.
