Field Engineer – Structures (Assistant Structures Representative) – LAWA - ATMP Roadways

Salary Range:
- Field Engineer I: $135,200 annually
- Field Engineer II: $174,720 annually
- Field Engineer III: $222,560 annually

POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
KKCS is seeking a qualified Field Engineer – Structures (Assistant Structures Representative) to support ongoing construction at Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA). This individual will assist the Structures Representative in overseeing and inspecting bridges, retaining walls, falsework, and other structural elements associated with large-scale transportation infrastructure. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, knowledgeable in Caltrans standards, and capable of coordinating with contractors, stakeholders, and inspection teams in a dynamic field environment. The position is Full-Time, Onsite (5 days/week), and in LAWA’s Los Angeles, CA (Project Office).
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support LAWA Construction Inspection Division and City of LA with daily structural field inspections, including cast-in-place concrete, structural steel, precast elements, post-tensioning, falsework, and CIDH piles.
- Prepare and maintain inspection checklists, sampling/testing logs, and documentation per project specifications.
- Ensure conformance with Caltrans Standard Specifications and Bridge Construction Records and Procedures (BCRP) manual.
- Maintain thorough documentation: daily reports, photo logs, inspection notes, quantity tracking, as-built drawings, and punchlists.
- Assist with the review and processing of RFIs, submittals, field directives, change orders, and task orders.
- Monitor contractor progress and assist in schedule reviews and coordination.
- Support verification of grades/elevations using surveying tools and develop grade sheets and 4-scale drawings for CIP Post-Tensioned Box Girder Bridges.
- Coordinate material sampling and testing with LAWA Labs, BCA, Caltrans METS, and other agencies.
- Communicate effectively with agency staff, contractors, and other stakeholders to resolve field issues.
- Assist with close-out documentation and final inspections.
- Willingness to workdays, nights, and/or weekends in active heavy construction environments and elevated structures, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
Required Experience & Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in public works or transportation projects, with structural experience.
- Familiarity with Caltrans Bridge Construction procedures and specifications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Bluebeam.
- Strong documentation and organizational skills.
- Valid California driver’s license and ability to work safely on active construction sites.
Preferred:
- Experience with cast-in-place post-tensioned box girder bridges, falsework, temporary shoring, mass soil mixing, and retaining walls.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or working toward PE license.
- Caltrans Structure Rep training or experience with METS inspection processes.
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification.
- Experience working on progressive design-build, design-build, or CMGC projects.
- Familiarity with LAWA Design and Construction Handbook and delivery procedures.
