The North Carolina Zoo is seeking an energized and collaborative Assistant Project Manager to be a part of the Planning and Construction team. The successful candidate will support the Zoo efforts in engineering and construction planning, inspection, design and construction contract administration. A wide spectrum of work is available from small repairs that require outside contractors to supporting larger Capital Improvement projects.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manage the design and construction process for a variety of projects ranging from sidewalk and fence repairs to supporting tasks within larger capital projects.
- Prepare specifications for projects that do not require a design professional; obtain quotes and/or bid small projects. Manage the process to award contracts to successful contractors.
- Maintain project records during and after construction, such as invoices, submittals, and warranty documents. Track expenditures and monitors project budgets.
- Manage service contract projects, such as glass replacement, and warranty repairs.
- Review construction quality to ensure adherence to plans, specifications, and sound construction practices.
- Provide project updates as appropriate to the Planning and Construction Manager. Support the Planning and Construction team in the preparation of R&R and Capital funding requests.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position/Physical Requirements:
Work schedule is Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:30pm
Position is required to work 3-4 weekends per year as weekend and/or holidays as Manager on Duty, or as needed.
Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
Required to participate in an occupational health program due to contact with animal containment areas.
Must have the agility and physically ability to regularly and safely: lift up to 25 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally; bend, stoop, and work in tight spaces; climb stairs and ladders; move over and about all types of equipment to inspect, analyze and perform repairs; stand for the majority of the day; endure extended outdoor field conditions at any time of the year; negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on foot; hear and respond to radio communication; and drive motor vehicles at day and at night.

Management Prefers:
- Ability and knowledge to monitor & manage construction projects, technically direct others, estimate costs, and review/evaluate the work of others.
- Demonstrated knowledge of NC General Statutes and NC Building Codes relating to engineering planning, design, consulting, contract administration, construction, renovation and major maintenance and repair.
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Bluebeam or Adobe.
- Engineering and/or architectural design or construction administration experience or capital project management experience.
Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution
AND
two (2) years of progressive technician level experience;

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Veteran's and National Guard Preference
