Position Summary

Under general supervision, performs routine service, maintenance and complex overhauls on the District's motor vehicle and equipment fleet. The position is assigned to either the automotive group or the equipment group of Transportation; however, operational requirements may necessitate temporary assignment as needed. May perform Auto Service Person or Fuel Truck Driver duties as required.

Education

Required - High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Minimum Requirements

Required - Experience with computers or other electronic devices to diagnose engine controls and monitoring equipment. and

Required - Minimum of 2.5 years of satisfactory performance in the Mechanic I position. or

Required - Minimum of 5.5 years of experience as a full-time mechanic at a car or truck dealership, machinery dealership or general vehicle or machinery repair facility.

Licenses, Certifications and/or Testing

Required - ASE Certifications as a Master Automotive technician and certifications in three (3) categories of the Truck Technician. Note: The District will pay for initial and ongoing re-certification while employed in any Transportation Mechanic position. Upon Hire and

Required - Have and maintain a valid driver's license within 90 Days and

Required - Class A CDL License Maintain an unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 90 Days and

Required - HAZMAT Certification and tanker endorsement. within 90 Days

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Must have proven performance in following procedures, effective communication and performing assignments in a timely manner with attention to detail, safety and professionalism.

Efficient written and verbal communication skills, in English, to assist internal and external customers, co-workers and management professionally, regardless of provocation.

Ability to safely operate District vehicle and equipment fleet assets for diagnosis and verification of repairs.

Proficiency with personal computers, tablets, and/or other electronic devices to include familiarity with, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word) and enterprise wide software (e.g., SAP). (Intermediate proficiency)

Ability to learn new or upgraded computer software as required.

Essential Functions

Perform repairs or adjustments on engines, transmissions, drive trains, differentials, suspensions, exhaust systems, brakes, tires and other mechanical components of District vehicles and equipment.

Perform tune-ups, fluid flushes, and component replacements, including major repairs such as engine replacements.

Perform inspections, flushes and replaces radiators.

Perform wheel alignments and other suspension related adjustments.

Inspect and repair steering systems.

Inspect and repair hydraulic systems.

Fabricate, cut, and weld parts and components using Oxy-Acetylene, MIG, and other welding methods as needed.

Prepare and equip new vehicles and equipment before they are placed into active service.

Diagnose and repair vehicle equipment electrical malfunctions.

Perform repairs on starting and charging systems.

Repair or replace winches and cables.

Perform cold start ups on District vehicles and equipment.

Perform duties in a shop environment as well as in the field.

Maintain accurate records of work performed on District vehicles and equipment using District fleet management workflows including paper and software systems.

Install, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot vehicle GPS and telematics systems; verify proper operation during inspections and preventive maintenance; perform software updates or component replacements as needed.

Utilize computers and diagnostic tools to complete work orders, access technical data, and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.

Drive the District fuel truck and perform fueling operations if needed.

Operate and drive various District vehicles and heavy equipment for testing and field service calls.

Perform on-site and field service maintenance and repair tasks in various environmental conditions.

May fill in for the Foreman, Transportation - Shift or Foreman, Transportation positions when needed.

May be required to repair and maintain the District's gasoline and diesel fueling system.

Periodic availability for on-call, stand-by and emergency call out duties.

May be required to repair and maintain District's CNG Fueling equipment.

- Ability to work outside for extended periods of time in all weather conditions, as well as in the shop.

- Perform the physical requirements of the job, including working in awkward positions, removing and/or installing truck tires, lifting and carrying heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

- Work in an environment with exposure to shop chemicals, and other materials such as cleaners and solvents.
