Job Title: Geospatial Survey Crew Chief
Location: Remote / Field-Based with Travel as Required
Reports To: Senior Production and Operations Manager or Director of Operations
Position Summary: CompassData is seeking an experienced and organized Geospatial Survey Crew Chief to lead and manage field operations for high-accuracy Ground Control Point (GCP) surveys and other geospatial data collection projects. This role is ideal for a professional with proven field surveying experience and leadership capabilities who is ready to take on the responsibility of managing field crews from both a technical and logistical standpoint.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee geospatial survey field operations, ensuring accuracy, safety, and efficiency in the collection of GCPs and other spatial data.
- Apply deep knowledge of ground control survey methods and best practices in diverse environments.
- Manage and coordinate field crew logistics, including equipment prep, travel planning, data collection schedules, and project-specific documentation.
- Provide on-site technical guidance and troubleshooting to ensure data quality and compliance with project requirements.
- Serve as the primary liaison between field crews and project managers to maintain clear communication and reporting.
- Train, mentor, and supervise field technicians to uphold performance and safety standards.
- Track and document daily field activities, including equipment use, crew hours, data collected, and field conditions.
- Contribute to continuous process improvement by refining field workflows and documentation protocols.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 35 years of professional field survey experience, with direct involvement in Ground Control Point (GCP) acquisition.
- At least 2 years in a supervisory or crew leadership role.
- Strong working knowledge of geospatial survey tools and methods, including GNSS/GPS equipment, total stations, data collectors, and survey software.
- Excellent organizational and logistical planning skills.
- Proven ability to manage a crew from both administrative and technical perspectives.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively to support field operations (including remote locations and international sites).
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- FAA Part 107 certification and/or UAV survey experience.
- Experience in LiDAR, mobile mapping, or aerial imagery support workflows.
- Familiarity with data processing or quality control standards related to survey deliverables.
