Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to supervise grounds and facility maintenance work crews, including group and event management and workplace safety.

This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Enforces safety procedures to ensure safe operation of equipment and employee safety.
  • Transports workers, equipment and materials to and from work sites.
  • Provides technical assistance and instruction concerning the operation and use of equipment and materials.
  • Plans, schedules and adjusts projects and work procedures to meet deadlines.
  • Receives and completes work orders for group and event set-up.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Parks & Recreation, Landscaping, Horticulture or related discipline.
  • One (1) year of park or facilities management, landscaping, horticulture, forestry, or grounds maintenance experience, including one year of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.

Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

Traffic; Moving machinery.

Skilled trades management involved in various trades with an emphasis in carpentry. Electric, plumbing, construction and excavation experience is desired.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

  • Pesticide Applicator's License.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
