EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High School Diploma or GED Minimum baseline for entry into the field.

Associate Degree in Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration or Environmental Control Technologies Preferred by many employers for advanced roles.

Technical Certifications :

  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification (Section 608) Required for handling refrigerants.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES , include the following. The Lead HVAC Technician oversees the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across residential, commercial, or institutional facilities. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, ensuring high-quality service delivery and team performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC systems including chillers, boilers, rooftop units, split systems, and building automation controls.
  • Lead and mentor a team of HVAC technicians, assigning tasks, reviewing work, and providing on-the-job training.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals to plan and execute installations and repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, building codes, and environmental regulations.
  • Respond to emergency service calls and oversee preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and internal departments to coordinate work and resolve issues.
  • Manage inventory of tools, parts, and equipment; recommend purchases and improvements.
  • Document service reports, maintenance logs, and compliance records accurately.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of HVAC experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, and energy efficiency practices.
  • EPA Universal Certification required; NATE certification preferred.
  • Valid drivers license with a clean driving record.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in varied environmental conditions.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with building automation systems (e.g., Trane, Johnson Controls, Siemens).
  • Proficiency in estimating labor and materials for HVAC projects.
  • Experience training junior technicians and fostering team development.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
