Senior Staff Electronic Design Engineer (Multiple Positions), Tesla, Inc., Austin, TX:
Optimize the design of PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) with respect to layout, electrical and mechanical constraints, manufacturability and relative costs of various alternatives. Determine high voltage circuit board creepage and clearance requirements for board voltages up to 1500V. Determine Altium net classes, board layout rules, room structures, and assembly variants needed. Place and route components ranging from fine pitch and ball grid array integrated circuits to much larger through-hole connectors and inductors. Apply IPC Standards in the generation of layouts. Interface with PCB fabrication houses to determine the design for manufacturing techniques needed for high volume designs, including any contract manufacturer specific requirements. Generate Altium pc board files, Bills of Material (BOM), and upload them to PLM. Determine the pc track width needed for the current demand of the electrical design. Choose and adjust the pc track routing and lengths for circuitry operating at frequencies as high as 6GHz, particularly for impedance control and matching. Place components and route traces to host assembly-level compliance with Federal Communications Commission, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, the European Union, and other market requirements.
Telecommuting permitted up to 100% from anywhere in the US.
Full time employment, Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related and six (6) years of experience in Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) layout. Alternatively, will accept a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related and four (4) years of experience in Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) layout.
Work experience to include: Experience reading and generating electrical schematics to then determine correct component placement for low parasitic capacitance, inductance and PCB layout techniques for power electronics circuits; Experience designing printed circuit boards using fine pitch (0.65mm or less), ball grid array (0.8mm spacing) integrated circuits, and large through hole components; Experience determining PC track widths and copper weights needed for PCB operation and impedance control; Characteristic impedance, trace coupling and return paths for applications at radio frequencies as high as 2.4GHz; and Experience preventing or mitigating EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) or EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) issues.
