The City of Seattle is seeking a journey-level heavy duty/equipment mechanic or automotive mechanic (AM). This role works on a wide variety of fleet equipment, including class 1-8 over-the-road (OTR) vehicles, off road equipment, utility vehicles, and miscellaneous components. For example, hybrid and EV vehicles, aerial equipment, road construction specialty vehicles, and hydro-excavator trucks - all of which support essential City of Seattle operations.

As fleet mechanic, you are part of a team that performs preventative maintenance, ensures repairs are completed, and performs emergency repairs for the people who count on us to keep their equipment safe and reliable. The City of Seattle has committed to transitioning the fleet to alternative energy so you will have an opportunity to work on cutting edge technology alongside old-school equipment.

You will be working in a great team atmosphere. In addition to your shop supervisor, you will be supported by a Crew Chief and a Senior Mechanic. The successful candidate will have a strong background in mechanical systems and diagnostics. Through training and working with mentors you will gain knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic principals, diesel and gas engine technology, and EV/alternative fuels.

Our shop hours are 6:00am 12:30am. During your first year you will work in different shops and shifts to become familiar with the services Fleets provides to city departments. Permanent shift assignment is based on seniority after completion of probation. In addition to regularly scheduled day and swing shifts, we provide on-call services nights and weekends, and 24-hour service during city emergencies such as extreme weather events. You are required to be available for on call and emergency events. There are shift differential premiums paid for swing shifts, paid training opportunities and paid weekend/evening on-call time.

  • Perform diagnostic, repair, and preventative maintenance work on equipment

  • Perform road tests on all light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, as assigned

  • Document work clearly and completely in fleet management system

  • Accurately record time by punching on/off tasks in fleet management system

  • Complete assigned safety, city-wide, and technical training

  • Participate in collaborative tasks and projects

Minimum Qualifications :

Four years of experience working under a journey-level Automotive or Heavy-Duty Mechanic

OR completion of an accredited apprenticeship program

OR a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background of journey-level mechanic

LICENSES:

Must possess a valid State of Washington driver's license.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Washington State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no restrictions (i.e., Class A or Class B CDL, depending on job duties) within six (6) months of hire.

The most successful candidates will possess the following:

Advanced knowledge of vehicle mechanics and fleet equipment maintenance

Advanced knowledge of mechanical and hydraulic principals

Training or experience with Electric or Hybrid vehicles

Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified

Organizational and problem-solving skills

Experience using electronic work order management software, such as CDK or FleetAnywhere

Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • This position requires full-time onsite work.

This position is classified as a Civil Service, Regular. It is Civil Service represented, FLSA non-exempt and is eligible for overtime. The full range for this step-progression position is $ 45.88 - $53.63 per hour.
