Schedule: Flexible, Part-Time 10-12 hours/week

Job Summary:

Assists the Scene Shop Technical Director in construction of scenery for each production in a safe manner, on schedule as determined in conjunction with the other members of the production team.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assists in ensuring completion of scenic designs by building scenery for all departmental productions based on design documentation. This includes utilizing appropriate and safe construction methodology, distributing assignments to student workers, completing portions of the work that cannot be done by non-staff labor alone, taking necessary measures to ensure that the design will be completed on time.
  • Ensures the shop is opened and closed for each work session, that all tools have been put away, and that the shop and/or stage area are clean.
  • Ensure that the shop is kept in a safe working condition by remedying any safety problems that arise, reporting any unsafe conditions that cannot be directly remedied by him or her to the technical director.

  • Experience in working carpentry in any field (theatre, construction industry, learned at home)
  • Ability to work with hand, electric, and pneumatic power tools.
  • Ability to climb tall ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to lift heavy items such as platforms and equipment.
  • Ability to order and pick up supplies necessary for the scenery.
  • Ability to understand and interpret instructions for accurately completing work.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail for accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and set workload priorities for efficient use of students and time.
  • Ability to set goals and organize tasks for timely completion of projects.
  • Ability to work with a variety of jobs and meet deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary for communicating effectively.
  • Ability to think logically in problem solving.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm, orderly and accurate manner, and to complete work on time.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of students.

Education and Experience:

  • Must be a regular, full-time student, enrolled in at least 12 hours per semester
  • Must have a completed FAFSA on file with Financial Aid for the current academic year
  • Must be eligible for work study.
