JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of roads, bridges, and surrounding grounds, and for directing traffic around work sites.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Puts signs up informing motorists of traffic situations or dangers.
  • Rakes gravel, shovel and smooth asphalt on roads, and fill potholes.
  • Directs traffic around construction sites using flags.
  • Cuts weeds and grass along roads and intersections; trims trees for appearance and motorist visibility.
  • Drives pick-up truck carrying county employee workers to work sites.
  • Installs street signs and marker posts for public information.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs other related duties as required.

PERSONNEL SUPERVISED: None.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and requires handling and occasional exposure to hazardous chemicals.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to attend work regularly and reliably.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Digital dexterity is necessary for equipment operation.
  • Capable of frequent walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or bending.
  • Ability to lift and carry loads up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Ability to concentrate for long periods of time.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Completion of grade school coursework sufficient to provide reading ability; some experience performing manual labor or related duties; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.

  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment job-related physical and motor vehicle report.
  • In addition to pre-employment checks, employees who operate county vehicles are required to undergo an annual motor vehicle report.
  • This position is safety-sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must have or be able to immediately obtain a valid Arkansas Driver's License.
  • Must have a stable work history.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.
